Oriented south and north, the ancestral home of Zhou Enlai is a masonry building in style of the Ming Dynasty. Above the gate of the house, there are five Chinese characters of “Zhou En Lai Zu Ju (Ancestral Home of Zhou Enlai)” written by Chen Yun. It was named “Xiyang Hall” at first and then “Hall of One Hundred Years”. That is because when one of the ancestors of Zhou En lai, Mrs. Wang, was one hundred years old, the provincial governor of Zhejiang conferred her an inscribed tablet with four Chinese characters “Bai Sui Shou Mu (means congratulations to you on your birthday of one hundred years old)”. Remedied for several times, the building basically kept the original style and structure. The ancestors of Zhou Enlai had lived there for generations before moving to Huaian when his grandfather got an official position in Jiangsu.
The Ancestral Home of Zhou Enlai consists of three lines of houses, which are separated by patios, with stone corridor on both sides. The building is regular in whole structure and statedly and simple in appearance, full of the local color of Shaoxing. Hall of One Hundred Years has been destructed for lack of repair. After 1949, the government and the people have requested the remedy of it for many times, which was dissuaded by Zhou Enlai and Deng Yingchao. After the remedy at the end of 1950s, the ancestral home was given to the state in request of Zhou Enlai. In 1980s, the local government completely restored the Hall of One Hundred Years and basically retrieved its original appearance. In 1998, they refitted it again and enlarged Zhou Enlai Memorial in memory of the 100th birthday of Zhou Enlai. Afterwards, Zhou Enlai Square was built.
The native place of Zhou Enlai is Shaoing, and the birthplace is Huaian. But now, many experts put forward lots of new evidences, showing that Zhou Enlai was born in Shaoxing and raised in Huaian of Jiangsu, which may be a secret of history. According to the materials known by people at present, Zhou Enlai contributed all of his life to the revolution and construction of China, only came back to Shaoxing on March 28th in 1939, when he propagandized resisting Japan as undersecretary of the Political Department of Military Committee of the Nationality Government of China. Meanwhile, in the company of relatives, he offered sacrifice at the ancestral grave, filled the names of Deng Yingchao and himself in the family tree and left many mottos and photos, fully presenting his deep love to the people of his hometown. This significant activity is in display in the Exhibition Hall of the Life of Zhou Enlai. And the room of not more than 10 sq. m in the left of the patio in the front of the Hall of Mottos is the place where Zhou Enlai took a rest during his visit of Shaoxing in 1939.
