The stele is very big. It is 3.88 meters high and 1.46 meters wide. There are many Chinese characters on the stele. Besides the superscription, there remain more than 900 Chinese characters. It is called the Big Cuan and is one of the most valuable steles in Yunnan during the period of Jin Dynasty and Song Dynasty.
The Cuan Long Yan Stele was built in the second year of Daming of Song of the South Dynasty (458AD). Yan (Yan Zhenqing, a great calligrapher in Tang Dynasty) style is characterized by squareness, and the circular turns. It is no like the rectangular turn in the Cuan Bao Zi Stele which has more characteristics of regular script. We can find from the roundness and firmness of the strokes on the Cuan Long Yan Stele that it came, in fact, from the Seal character which are very massive though there are square strokes and round strokes.
