Suzhou Creek has played an important role in the modern history of Shanghai. It runs from the Huangpu River all the way to Taihu Lake in the west and it used to be an important trading route to the silk factories and plantations of Suzhou. Once it was also the main source for drinking water in Shanghai. Twenty years ago Suzhou Creek was one of the most contaminated rivers in Shanghai. During the 20th century the river had been polluted by factories, rubbish and fertilizers to the point where it was black and virtually void of any form of life. But during the past decade the City of Shanghai has made an successful effort to clean up the river, and it is now well on its way to a full recovery.

The history of Suzhou Creek and the life around it can be viewed in the Shuzhou Creek Exhibition Hall. The exhibition has three floors dealing with water issues, the history of Shanghai for the last millennium, and the restoration work of Suzhou Creek. The Exhibition Hall is located in the old Shanghai Brewery building, built in the 1930s and designed by the Hungarian architect Laszlo Hudec. The building is surrounded by the large Mengqing Park where you also can find examples of all the different kinds of vegetation available around Suzhou Creek.
