The historic villas of the scenic area known as “Eight Great Passes’ are located north of the site of Hiquan Corner. They adjoin Huiquan Bend to the west and Taiping Bend to the south. The names of the streets where these historic villas are located, are derived from eight famous passes of the Great Wall of China. They are: Shaoguan Road, Ningwuguan Road, Zijingguan Road, Jiayuguan Road, Hanguguan Road, Zhengyangguan Road, Linhuaiguan Road, and Juyongguan Road. The eight roads form a network of intersecting streets, hence the scenic area is called “The Eight Great Passes.” Recently, two more streets have been added to the the “Eight Great Passes’ scenic area. The villas of this area embody well the characteristics of “red tiles, green trees, green sea, blue sky” of Qingdao. Their charms first are reflected in their buildings in a multitude of styles. There are German, Russian, British and American styles; there are French, Italian, Swiss and Grecian styles; Spanish, Austrian, Japanese and even other styles. They represent the classically simple, the unsophisticated beauties and vivacious lively beauties. The reputation of “Museum of Hundreds of Nations” suits this collection of historic homes of the “Eight Great Passes’ area very well.
It is said the 200 or so houses here represent twenty four architectural styles of the world. The construction here combines the styles of western classical and western romantic ones. German style is represented by the design of plane symmetry and extrusive axes. Gothic style is represented by the design of steep sloping roofs. Spanish style is represented by the design with extensive décor. All the villas with their setting of mountains and sea blend in with each other and their natural scenic environment.
One of the special characteristic of the villas of “Eight Great Passes’ is that the streets can be clearly differentiated by their floral and arboreal plantings. For example there are hundreds of different “Bitao” (peach trees) and yellow “Lianqiao” (Forsythia) on Shaoguan Road. Other streets are alive with redleaf plum trees. Ningwu Road has been dubbed “flower street’ by foreign friends for the graceful waves of purple violets that decorate it.
In recent years a new peach woods has been established on the northeast corner of the “Eight Great Passes’ area, now an ideal place for walking in spring. Green cypresses trees thrive on the southwest corner. And the most interesting thing is that many “natural compartments” have developed among the green cypresses. Because of these “private rooms’, lovers are attracted to the place now know by them as “Love Corner”.
