Briefing of the Spot:
Yadan Wood provides poetic and unique scenery. The wood covers an area of about 21,000 square kilometers and has an average altitude of 3,260 meters; it is also the largest wind-eroded hillocks discovered in China until today. Yadan Physiognomy in Uygur means “wind-eroded hillocks”. Yadan Physiognomy in Qaidam Basin originates from west-wind-eroded sculptures which are made of salt and sands in the earth’s crust 75 million years ago, this is a kind of wind-eroded physiognomy, or it can also be called sand-eroded hillock or wind-eroded hillock. In an area of 17,000 square kilometers in Lenghu, sand-eroded hillock makes up more than 94%. Nanbaxian, Dafeng Mountain, Cucumber Channel, Ebo Bridge, Niubizi Bridge to the south of Qaidam Lenghu have a large area of wind-eroded hillocks. The sand rocks are large in size and densely distributed, so they are also called sand-eroded hillocks.
Seen from a long distance, Yadan Wood has a varied shape, some share a resemblance with ancient castles, temples, emperor tombs, soldier tents, some look like groups of whales playing sea sands, million lions facing the rising sun, ten thousand dragons arranging battle arrays. The appearance ranges greatly, presenting a spectacular view. Seen from a short distance, the hillocks look like worships with a full sail which are about to brave a long journey, some look like valiant roosters who are going to crow, some look like delicate pavilions in small bridges across a brook, some look like lovely animals such as elegant horses, camels, elephants, lions, tigers, whales, dragons, birds. The panoramic scenery calls to mind profound mystery and unbending variation. When you are in the wood, you may find yourself at a complete loss. In the 1950s, eight geologic surveyors from the south died here due to losing their way. From then on, this place was named “Nanbaxian”. Wind-eroded physiognomy represents one of Qinghai’s attractions.
