Briefing of the Spot:
“Tawentaliha” originates from Mongolian, meaning “five mountains”. The cultural relic is perfectly protected since there is little rain or no rain for years. The relic is a square paved with yellow sands and 250 meters long with a width of 150 meters, presenting an area of about 200,000 square meters. The square relic is surrounded by four hillocks and three dunes. No site and relic is discovered in the square since it is just a religious venue, making it unique in the whole country. The cultural layer of the site is piled up on the ground, which is in sharp contrast with other sites whose relics are underground. The site is irregular in shape, and supported by pillars, on which there still remains special constructive structure and abode walls. Houses in the relic are rectangular or round. The houses are fenced with adobe construction, and there are piles of sheep wastes in the houses. In this site, a lot of relics are excavated, including silk and fur ware, bronze ware and so on. What attracts us most is the excavated ropes, on which are some slipknots and fast knots. There are also ropes with several knots; they may be symbols of ancients’ keeping records by tying knots.
The relic dates back to the Western Zhou Dynasty to Warring Period as well as Qin and Han Dynasties. With reference to records, the relic may be created by one of the ancient Qiang Groups; it is significant for us to research historical changes of China’s Ethnic Minorities and the change in civilization and climate in ancient times in Qaidam Basin.
