The Ta’er Monastery is one of the key historic sites under the state protection, which was one of the first group announced by the State Department in 1961. It’s the Buddhist garden buildings, combining the architectural arts of the Zang and Han nationalities. A lot of cultural relics are stored in the temple, including all kinds of instruments used in Buddhism, statues of Buddha in different poses, profound sutras and stone inscriptions in language of the Zang and Man nationalities, as well as Mongolian. The Ta’er Monastery is really an art treasury of Buddhism. The buildings are well designed, which is a harmonious blend of architectural styles of the Zang and Han nationalities as well as Buddhism.
Located at the bank of the Huangshui River in the east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Ta’er Monastery is the birthplace of Zong Geba. He is a great hierophant in the snowy region and the founder of the Gelu School, which is the branch of Tibetan Buddhism. The Ta’er Monastery is the place where one of six major Gelu Schools exists. Zong Geba(1357-1419) is a great hierophant in the snowy region and the inaugurator of the Shangui School of Tibetan Buddhism, the founder of the Gandan Temple in Lhasa, the initiator of the Lhasa Praying Buddhist Ceremony, a superior of Dalailama?and Panchen Lama?. He is an outstanding Buddhism expert, philosopher, and religion reformer. He is well-known in the world. He was born in the Gold Tile Hall in the Ta’er Monastery in 1357, and died in the Gandan Temple in Lhasa in 1417. He widely absorbed the merits of others and invented the Clean and Quite Method of the Gelu School. He wrote books and created theory, making the Xianmi Theory of Tibetan Buddhism perfect. During the past 600 years, the Clean and Quite Method and the profound Xianmi Theory has widely spread in and out of the snowy region. They have been benefiting our human beings. “Saint Cowry Buddha” is the honorific title to Zong Geba. “Zongge” means ” the Huangshui Valley of Xining” and “Ba” means ” the person of” in Tibetan. The most precious sacred object in the Ta’er Monastery is a banyan, the veins of tree naturally appears the image of lion roaring to Buddha. The banyan just lies where Zong Geba dripped blood when he was born. Its root extends in all directions as if human’s body is stretched out. It’s the origin of the Gelu School.
In 1379, the mother of Zong Geba built the Lianju Tower, centering on the banyan. One hierarch called RenqingzongZhejianzhan built the Milefo Hall at the left side of the Lainju Tower in 1560. The tower was built first and the temple was built next. Therefore, it was first call ” Ta’er Monastery” in Chinese. Over the past 600 years, the temple was constantly enlarged with the help of hierarchs and awake people of Zang, Mongolia, Tu, and Han nationalities. Majestic 52 building group has gradually formed, combining the architectural styles of Zang and Han nationalities. It centers on the Gold Tile Hall and regards the five seminaries as emphasis. The unique temple and halls are splendid. Masses of books are stored in the temple, such as, Gan Zhu Er, Dan Zhu Er, Collected Edition of Zong Geba and his prentices. Fresco, barbola and ghee flower represent the rich and colorful temple culture. All kinds of fine cultural relics are stored here too. The blending of national cultures and the forming of the education center make the Ta’er Monastery become the art treasury and the state-level museum. What’s more, the Ta’er Monastery is the base of China’s Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture.
