It is located in the south of Helanshan Mountain which is over 40km west of Yinchuan City. It stands on the junction of Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. There are three passes, namely, first pass, second pass and third pass from east to west.
According to the historical records, Qi Zhi, a commissioner-in-chief in Ming Jiajing period, spent a tremendous amount of money in building a 80km-long great wall with the three passed in the north. But unfortunately, it was buried by sand. Later, Yang Shouli, a governor of Ningxia, renovated it and built a great wall in the north. Stretching north along the Helanshan Mountain ridge, the northern wall was built by stone, and had an abutment at each turning. But the wall and the abutment were damaged, leaving only some relics. The great wall which extends southeast is comparatively intact.
The third pass of the Great Wall is sandwiched between two mountains with a narrow valley and steep cliffs. Look upward and you will see the majestic peaks. Look downward and you will see the valley floor. All of those make it strategically important and difficult to conquer. It seems that one man guards the pass, and then ten thousand are unable to get through.
