Changbai Mountain, the highest mountainous region of the northeast of China, is well-known as the white pumice and snow of the main peak in the Baitou Mountain.
The main peak is 2691 meters above the sea level. The massif is vertical-horizontal. There are 16 mountains which have more than 2500 meters altitude and cover a total area of over 8,000 square kilometers with the north in the Songjiang Town of Antu County; the west in the Wusong County; the east in Nangang Hill of Helong County. The south extends as far as the territory of the DPRK. Changbai Mountain with time-honored history was attached great importance in every dynasty especially in Jin (1115-1234AD), Qing(1644-1912AD), and Yuan (1271-1638)Dynasties. It was considered as the original place of the ancestors and Holy Mountain, and the symbol of the luck and revival.
Changbai Mountain is called “the non- salty mountain” in history, the meaning of Mountain of the god. Changbai Mountain is one dormant volcano with the highest and biggest spout, which was formed about 2 million years ago. In terms of historical records, the mountain has erupted three times since the 16th century. The scenery of Changbai Mountain is attractive and fantastic with over 30 scenic spots because of its unique geographical structure. When you ascend the peak of the mountain, you get a broad horizon with a terrific feeling that Changbai Mountain dwarf all the mountains around. Because of the vertically change of the topography of mountain region, Changbai Mountain has four views from the warm zone to the frigid zone with the altitude of the mountain. These naturally colorful vertical views are rare even in the world, which is characterized by unique features: there are four seasons in the mountain and different weather away from ten kilometers.
Changbai Mountain possesses not only exceptional scenery but also rich resources and varied species. Changbai Mountain Reserved Zone, one of the largest natural reserved zone of China, highlights Tianchi of Changbai Mountain, surrounded by north, west, and south of the Changbai Mountain. Changbai Mountain Natural Reserved Protection Zone
Changbai Mountain Natural Reserved Protection Zone was founded in 1960 with a total area of 196465 hectares with Tianchi of Changbai Mountain as its core. It is one of the earliest and most important natural reserved protection zones. It is a huge polymorphous volcano with fantastic landscape, classical and complete resources of animals and plants, featured by ice scene of north region because of unique geographical location and structure.
Changbai Mountain is the most typical natural synthesis of the north of the Eurasia and the rare place with “gene store of species” and “the natural museum”. The statistics shows that over 1800 higher plants, over 50 kinds of beasts, 280 kinds of birds, 50 kinds of fish and more than 1000 insects live here. The depths of forests of Changbai Mountain abound in crude drugs such as ginseng, northern schisandra chinensis, etc and boasts rare wild animals like northeast tigers, red deer, sables, otters, and black bears etc. Migratory birds such as Mandarin duck, black stork, mallard etc account for 70% of the birds. Changbai Mountain is also the home of the Songhua River, Tumen River, Yalv River. Changbai Mountain became a number of national biosphere protection zones in 1980 authorized by UNESCO and was listed as the world natural reservation. Now, the world people and some relevant organizations focus attention on it because it plays a more and more important role in the world natural protection zone.
Tianchi (Heavenly Lake)
Tianchi of Changbai Mountain (Tianchi of Baitou Mountain) is situated on the southeast of Jinlin Province and the boundary lake between China and DPRK. The north of lake is within the territory of Jinlin Province. It gains the name of the Heavenly Lake because it is located in the volcanic cone (the Peak of Changbai Mountain) and the altitude is 2,150 meters. Tianchi is the most famous scenic spot and essential place to tour for visitors.
The lake is oval in shape and the crater lake formed by the eruption of volcano naturally. When volcano sprayed a great number of lava, the crater of volcano shaped into a basin. After a long time, the heavenly lake formed because of the accumulation of the water of rain, snow, and underground spring. The lava of volcano piled up around the crater of the volcano and shaped into 16 mountain peaks: seven in DPRK, nine of them in China with different characteristics and amazing scenery. Tianchi is a natural enormous reservoir with ten square kilometers in surface. The calm and clear Tianchi is just like a jade that diffuses the mysterious sense encircled by sixteen mountain peaks around. It is the highest and the deepest volcano lake with the altitude of Tianchi is 2192meters, over 200 meters higher than Tianchi of Tianshan Mountain of Xinjiang Province. The best time for touring Tianchi is midsummer because you can see the real features with few clouds. Tianchi is honored as the home of three rivers because it is source of Songhua River, Yalu River and Tumen River.
Changbai Waterfall
Changbai Waterfall lies on the north of Tianchi, the end of Chengcha River, which flows 1250 meters, rushes down directly, and shapes into Changbai Waterfall as high as 68 meters. It earns its name “Changbai Waterfall” because it belongs to Changbai Mountain scenery. The waterfall seems like an inclined ladder as the slope is steep and the flow of water is rapid. A huge stone named “Niulangdu” divides the waterfall into two parts. The water like two dragons bravely jumps on the protrusive stone shoal, rushes into the deep valley, spatters the billows as high as decades of meters ,which is like a fairy maiden scattering flowers . The vapor is suffused with fog like the Milky Way falling down uncountable snow and the waterfall flowing the masses of vapor. The growl of waterfall can be heard even in the decades of kilometers away. The swag ,which is shaped by hundreds of year waterfall rush ,is as deep as about 20 meters under the waterfall .Visitors go through here and are often enchanted by the amazing scenery.
Heifengkou
When you ascend the mountain to Tianchi from the Northern Slope, you can see a concave in the barranca between the end of Bulao Peak east and viewing platform. That is the world-famous Heifengkou, where gales blow ceaselessly. When the Force Five blows on the mountaintop, sand and small stones can float. Therefore, visitors have no choice but scramble up the col. Although it is hard to do this, a great number of visitors choose it because you can relish the panorama of the waterfall in the col.
Changbai Hot Springs
A cluster of hot springs are scattered on the ground of 1,000 square kilometers under the black stones of Heifengkou, where has decades of terrestrial heat—the bigger one like the blow mouth and the smaller one like the thick finger. The hot springs giving out the hot vapor contain a special chemical composition that have dyed the rocks and gravel around into varied and bright colors such as golden yellow, crystal blue, deep red, and green etc., which attract and entertain the visitors a lot. Especially in winter, it is an exceptional scene with hot vapor and fog while other places are covered with ice and snow.
Changbai Hot Springs falls into the hot temperature category. Most of the hot springs have temperatures over 60 C; the highest is 82 C. If you put an egg into the hot springs, the egg will be cooked at once. Hot springs are honored as “supernatural water” because they can relax the muscles and stimulate the blood circulation and are very effective for some ailments such as arthritis, dermatosis. Hot spring bath were set up for visitors bathing and the temperature can be moderated in terms of demand. The renowned hot springs such as Changbai hot Spring, Tiyun Hot Spring, and Hubin Hot Spring etc attract a great many visitors home and abroad. In addition, there are Reed Hot Spring, Celestial Bridge Hot Spring Group, Shibadaogou Hot Spring, Yujiang Hot Spring, Yaoshui Hot Spring, etc.
Fairies Bath-Bow Pool
Located in the 30.4 kilometers east away from the northwest of the Tianwen Peak, Fairy Bath-Bow Pool is like round pool in shape. According to the legend, this place is where the three fairies fell from the heaven and bathed. The youngest of three swallowed a fruit, became pregnant, and gave a birth to a boy, who could speak as he emerged from the womb with an exceptional appearance. The boy was called Bukuli?Yongshun, the ancestor of Yongshun who was the emperor of Qing Dynasty(1644-1912 AD). In the 34th year of Guangxu(the ninth emperor of Qing Dynasty), the alternative county magistrate, Liu Jianfeng sought here and set up a stone monument for worship, which engraved the words “Fairy Bath-Bow Pool”. That was the reason why it gained its name. Fairy Bath-Bow Pool is a small volcano lake, where the water is clear and shallow and water plants are fruitful. There is no ice in the center in the winter and no duckweed in summer and also no water to pour into and overflow. The spring gushes like the column. The pines were planted around the pool. The sides of pool are covered with grass and flowers. It is just a fairyland when the swifts fly above the pool and the fish swim at the bottom and the cranes play with each other.
Beauty Pine
Beauty Pine is called Changbai Pine in botany. It is born in the Edaobai River of Changbai Mountain and falls into the long-green arbor category. The height is 25-30 meters; the diameter is 25-40 centimeter. The crown of the tree is oval or triangle or like the shape of umbrella. The bark of the part of under trunk presents brown and fissure, which displays irregular rectangle. The above displays brown-yellow or red-yellow and flakes present exfoliation. Beauty Pine gains its name because the shape is like a beauty. It is the typical beautiful scenery in Changbai Mountain.
Volcanic cluster of Changbai Mountain
Over 100 volcanoes are scattered around Changbai Mountain. The altitude of the largest volcano is about 2,600 meters and the diameter is as long as 4.5 kilometers, which presents tundish in shape and the deep is as far as more than 800 meter. The view is rare and unique nationwide. The altitude of the small cones around is 1,000 meters or so. The shape of the crater of the volcano is like overflow mouth, which displays chair-shape or crescent shape. The mountaintop is flat. The well-known volcanoes are Dong’emao Peak, Xi’emao Peak, Xima’an Mountain, Dongma’an Mountain, Red Peak and Old House Hill etc, which consists of the marvelous volcanic cluster.
Grand Canyon of Changbai Mountain
Grand Canyon of Changbai Mountain is situated in the Fusong County of Baishan City. It is a natural spectacle that has been discovered in the recent years. It can match the Grand Canyon of the USA. The Canyon of Changbai Mountain has the length of more than 70 kilometers, which was caused by erosion of the volcanic ash and mud and rain. Beijin River flows down from the bottom of the valley and a great many peculiar stones position two sides of the river and the wonders are eye-catching.
Small Tianchi
Small Tianchi is located in 3 kilometers north of the Changbai Waterfall. There are two small Tianchis: one is in the quiet birch forest and the altitude is 1780 meters .The surface of the lake presents rotundity with an area of 5380 square kilometers and over 10 meters deep. The water of the lake is green and clear. 200 meters away from the small Tianchi, there is a round pool similar to the Small Tianchi in size, but the depth is only several meters and sometimes the round lake is dried and displays the yellow mud. When you stand in the high position and look down, you will see that one presents crystal blue, the other is helvolus. The two of them are like a couple of gold and silver cups. That’s the reason why people call Small Tianchi the Couple Lake.
