In 653 A.D., the fourth year of Yongwei Period in Tang Dynasty, King Teng Li Yuanying, the younger brother of Emperor Taizong, built this pavilion when he was the Provincial governor of Nanchang. The famous poet Wang Bo wrote the well-known prose Preface to Tengwang Pavilion and made the pavilion famous all over China. Here, Wang Bo wrote the eternity famous phrase “the rosy fading clouds and a lonely wild duck fly together, the colors of the autumn water and the vast sky merges into same tone”.
Covering an area of 4.3 hectare, the pavilion was destroyed and rebuilt as many as 29 times. The main building of the existed pavilion was completed on 8th Oct. 1989. This nine-storied structure stands at 57.5 meters in height and occupies a construction area of 13,000 square meters. There are two subsidiary pavilions in the north and south connected by cloisters. Near Nanfu Garden and facing Mount Xi, it gets a broad view. It is only 100 meters away from the site of the pavilion in Tang Dynasty.
