Xianhe Temple is the most ancient Mosque temple ever retained I Yangzhou. It was built up in the first ruling year of Deyou Emperor in Southern Song Dynasty (1275 AD) when Puhaing, the sixteenth generation of Mahomet (the initiator of Islam), came to introduce Islam in Yangzhou. Later in 1390, the 23rd ruling year of Hongwu Emperor in Ming Dynasty, the temple was rebuilt for by Ha San, an Arabian missionary, after which it was rebuilt for many times. Xianhe Temple combines the characteristics of Islamic structure and those of ancient Chinese traditional architecture. Xianhe Temple, and the other three Islamic temples, namely, Phoenix Temple in Hangzhou, Huaisheng Temple in Guangzhou, and Kylin Temple in Quanzhou, are reputed as the “Four Grand Mosque Temples” in China.
