Wudangzhao Monastery was originally named Badagaer Monastery. Badagaer means White Lotus in Tibetan; Wudan means willow tree and Zhao means monastery respectively in Mongolian. The monastery was built by Lubusangjialacuo, the first Living Buddha during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, and it was restored when Emperor Qianlong was the ruler. From then on, the monastery underwent many an extension. Nowadays, Wangdaozhao Monastery is the biggest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia.Because it was built on a mountain called Ao Bao Mountain in the Wudang Gully, it is named “Wudangzhao”.Resting on the slope of a mountain, the monastery is a vast white complex in different levels with mountains around. Among the pine and cypress trees, the temple looks even grandeur.
With an area of over 300 mu, Wudangzhao Monastery has 2,500 rooms and storehouses. The complex is composed of six halls for chanting Buddhist scriptures, three Living Buddha mansions, one mausoleum and one lama dormitory. All buildings, which were built in a rational layout, have a Tibetan-style, flat-topped and square structure. All of the buildings have a special appeal against a background of blue sky and green mountains.
