Dongting Lake is the relic of Yunmeng Pool (consists of lakes and swamps, with the largest area of 26000 square kilometers). Dongting Lake is very big. Although it has reduced 50% percents from ancient times, it is still the second largest lake of China. One worthy spot is the mouth of three rivers, where Xiang River, Jin River and Dongting Lake converge to Changjiang. Besides, Junshan Island, Xianglu Mountain and Water Lity Pool are also worthy.
Junshan Island
It is called the pearl of Dongting Lake, looking like a “a green snail in a silvery plate”. It faces Yueyang Lake. There still exist the tomb of the two wives of ancient Emperor Shun, the mountain seal of Emperor Qin, the stage where Emperor Wu in Han Dynasty killed the dragon, the pavilion where immortal Lv Dongbin read aloud poems, the well of Liu Yi, etc.
In the island, there plant the famous “Junshan Yinzhen tea” and rare Elaeocarpus, mottled bamboo, square bamboo, plum blossom bamboo, as well as 30 kinds of birds such as gull, swan, cuckoo, etc.
Kindness Tower
It is located at the southwest of Yueyang City, the east lakefront of Dongting Lake. it was built during Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasty (731-741). The tower existed now was the one rebuilt in Song Dynasty, of brick and stone structure, seven layers, octagon. It is 39 meters high. From the second layer, there is a small Buddha cave each layer. It is one of the most ancient towers existed in Hunan Province. There are many stories on the origin of the tower. One story is like this: in ancient times, a girl’s father died of illness. Her family was too poor to bury her father, so the girl decided to sell herself to bury her father. Her filial piety moved a first-degree scholar. The scholar helped her to bury her father and brought her to live with his own daughter. Later, this girl married a husband of a good family and became quite rich. To express appreciation to the scholar, she built a stone tower. So, this tower was called “kindness tower”.
