According to the record of the ancient bronze mine relic of Tonglushan, the top of the mountain is high and flat, and there are many huge stones on it. When it rains, the mountain is dotted with lot of bronze minerals which looks like snowflakes and little beans, so it got the name of Tonglushan (translated as the mountain of bronze minerals). The Tonglushan ancient bronze relic is the bronze mine that had been used for mining and smelting from late Shang dynasty to Han dynasty.
Over 360 shafts and lanes, 7 smelting furnaces that had been unearthed are of the period from Western Zhou Dynasty (BC11century to BC 8century) to Western Han Dynasty (BC 5 century to BC 2 century). The relic was discovered in 1973, and so far it is the best preserved and most complete mining and smelting site of ancient China with the longest mining time, the highest smelting level and the largest scale. Being regarded as another wonder after the Terra-Cotta Soldiers, it can compare favorably with China’s Great Wall and Egypt Pyramid.
From the spring of 1974 to the summer of 1985, staffs from archaeology institute, cooperating with workers from the production department of the mine, had excavated scientifically and selectively. They sorted out hundreds of shafts and lanes that supported with wood pillar crisscross built in the period that passing through over 1000years from Western Zhou dynasty to the Western Han dynasty, and some vertical furnaces for bronze smelting that built in the period from the late Western Zhou dynasty to the early Spring and Autumn period, at the same time, they unearthed various kinds of production tools for hand-working excavation. It has been listed as the national important relics protection unit. Some of the mineral deposits are preserved permanently and any exploration is forbidden. The Museum of the Ancient Bronze Mining and Smelting Site of Tonglushan was constructed on a spot of a Spring and Autumn period mining relic in the protection zone.
The Ancient Bronze Mining and Smelting Site of Tonglushan is second to none of the mining relics all over the world. With a history of over 3000 years, it is a brilliant jewel of the ancient culture history of the Jiangnan Region, and a gem of the world cultural heritage.
