Mount Wudang was also called Taihe Mountain in ancient times. After the renovation of Xuanwu Temple in Ming Dynasty, it was renamed Mount Wudang in accordance with the meaning of ‘only the Guardian Spirit of the North deserves the title’.
Its grand mountain extends as long as 400 kilometers, facing Danjiangkou Reservoir, lying in front of Shennongjia forest zone. Wudang Mountain has 72 peaks. The main peak, Tianzhu Peak, is 1,612 meters high above the sea level. The other peaks all trend toward Tianzhu Peak, which become a marvelous spectacle. Since ancient times, Wudang Mountain has been an ideal place for Taoists to pursue their fairyland. Taoist structures extend all over the mountain on great significant scales. The legend has it that the black Warrior was inspired by the doctrine here to fly.
As the saying goes, ‘A mountain will become famous unless it is granted a title.’ Since the birth of Taoism in Western Han (25-220A.D.), emperors of the successive dynasties held ceremonies on Wudang Mountain to grand it a title. Since then it became famous day by day. Once it was called ‘the grandest mountain’, whose status was above the Five Sacred Mountains in the reign of the First Emperor of Ming Dynasty. It is Zhang Sanfeng, a master of great learning and integrity of his time, who made Mount Wudang well-known. He founded Wudang martial school, which enjoys the same popularity as ShaolinSchoolonMountSonginHenanProvince.
The scenery of Mount Wudang enjoys all the features of the magnificence of Mount Tai, the marvel and grotesqueness of Mount Huangshan, the peace and seclusion of Mount Yandang. It may be a little exaggerative to say in such way, but it is indeed worth a visit.
Local Customs:
The custom of ‘Worshiping Mount Wudang’ is equal to offering a sacrifice to the God of Mountain. It’s also a good way for people to enjoy their lives. It is similar to having worshiping at ancestral graves together with Spring Outing. ‘Worshiping Wudang Mountain’ is an interesting climbing activity. In the third lunar month, there is a sunlit and enchanting scene of spring; in the eighth lunar month, the autumn sky is clear and the air bracing. During the two seasons, Wudang Mountain is crowded with tourists, hustling and bustling.
