Jingpo Lake is located in the southwest of Mudanjiang city. It covers an area of 1.200 sq. kms and is a well-known scenic spot and summer retreat in north China. Jingpo Lake, born of a massive volcanic eruption about 10,000 years ago, is the largest lava-dammed lake in the upper reaches of Mudanjinag River in China. It is long and narrow and shaped like an S. It measures 45 kilometers long from the south to the north and maximum 6 kilometers wide from the west to the east. The lake is 350 meters above the sea level. It is over 60 meters at its deepest, but only one meter deep at its shallowest spots. The area of the Lake is 90.3 sq. kms, has a storage capacity of 1.6 billion cubic-meter water and is made up of the North Lake, the Central Lake, the South Lake, and the Upper Lake. The Lake winds down from the southwest to northeast. Scenic cruises and numerous islands and islets dotting the Lake make up the picturesque scenery of the Lake. Diaodhuilou waterfall, Dagu Hill, Xiaogu Hill, White Stone Lazi, City Wall Lazi, Pearl Gate, Taoist Mount and Laogu Lazi are among the eight wonder attractions along the ribbon-like Lake. Jingpo Lake’s unique beauty lies in its primitive and virgin state of ecosystem. Green mountains are in perfect company with the blue waters and winding mountain paths cut through the thickets of the bush land of the mountains. The misty Lake is made all the more intriguing by time-honored legendary stories that surround the Lake.
The tourist Center of Jingpo Lake is the Jingpo Mountain Retreat on the northern island of the Lake, where there are some villa complexes and tourist facilities. There are few other architectural buildings around the lake than the Mountain Retreat complex, which stands against the backdrop of ranges of forested mountains, and the splendor of the nature is all there for an eye feast. That explains why Jingpo Lake becomes the ultimate tourist destination. Taking a bird’s eye view from the villa complex, the vast expanse of its blue waters stretches far and wide to the skyline, as smooth and tranquil as a mirror, thus the name of Jingpo, mirror-like.
As one of the world’s 18 geoparks inscribed onto the heritage list of the UNESCO, Jingpo Lake is a research haven for scientists and a Mecca for nature lovers.
