The Yongxing Island is the largest island among the Xisha Islands, covering nearly two square kilometers. There are typical tropical landscapes on the island. With rows of coconut trees, it has charming and gentle sceneries.
When the store ship arrives at the Yongxing Island every month, the inhabitants of the whole island will take a holiday for two days, going to the wharf and unloading materials such as chickens, ducks, pigs, potatoes, cucumbers and mails, etc. On these two days, it is the festival on the island and the islanders are very happy. The officers and soldiers guarding the island are exchanged every other year while the missionaries are changed every half a year. The living water use on the island is the treated rain water. It is composed of drinking water and washing water.
The airport on the island can be used by Boeing Plane 737s and the ferry quay can berth ships of 5000 tonnage. The center of the island is in the Peking Road, where there are banks, hospitals, post office, department store and aquatic products corporation. On both sides of the pavement, there are orderly coconut trees, under which there are dark green lawns. The environment is quite tidy. The human landscapes on the island include the ancient blockhouse left by Japanese invaders, the monument to recovery established by the Kuomingtang and the monument to all the islands of the South Sea established by the People’s Government. The traces of history is preserved distinctly.
In the west of the island, there is a tract of coconut forest called “Xisha General Forest”, which are successively planted by the leaders of the Party and the state as well as more than one hundred generals. Each tree is carved with the name of the planter. Walking among the exuberant woods, watching the blue sea and enjoying the sea breeze are indeed the ultimate luxury.
