The Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, located in the Olympic Green, will be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 29th Olympiad, as well as track and field, and soccer events. In 2002 Government officials engaged architects worldwide in a design competition. Pritzker Architecture Prize-winner architects Herzog & De Meuron (Swiss) collaborated with Arup Sport and China Architecture Design Institute won the competition. The stadium will have a total capacity of 91,000 spectators during the Olympics, but 11 000 temporary seats will be removed after the Olympic Games, leaving a permanent capacity of 80 000. The Stadium is to stage sports events at national and international levels, as well as cultural and entertaining activities after the Olympic Games.
The stadium, with a total area of 258,000 sq m, is built with 36 km of unwrapped steel, with a combined weight of 42,000 tons. Seen as a whole, the stadium, with its structural elements mutually supporting each other and converging into a grid-like formation, is like a large bird’s nest with saddle-shaped roof. The spatial effect of the stadium is novel and radical and yet simple and of an almost archaic immediacy, thus creating a unique historical landmark for the Olympics 2008.
The interior of the stadium is like a large collective vessel or a big bowl. Spectators will feel very equal because the distance between every seat of the stand and the center of the stadium is almost the same, about 140 meters. The spacious ambulatory winds full circle around the stands, from where one can survey the entire area including the stairs that access the three tiers of the stands. The lobby, functioning like an arcade or a concourse, is a covered urban space with restaurants and stores which are all self-contained units. The spaces in the structure of the stadium is clad with ETFE (Ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene) cushions to make the stadium completely weatherproof, with an acoustic membrane on the lower surface to reflect and absorb sound for maintaining excellent acoustics in the stadium. Whilst the rain and the sunlight are collected for reusing, which makes the stadium very environmental-friendly. And the sunlight filtering through the translucent roof is enough to cater for the growing of lawn. And the natural ventilation is available, which is very different from and superior to other solid and enclosed stadium.
