It would be untruthful to call this delightfully peaceful place a one-horse-town; there are many horses, and the sound of their hooves thumping the reddish earth in the evening is one of the nicest things about it. Yapeyú was founded in 1626 as the southernmost of the Jesuit missions, and at its height had a population of more than 8000 Guaraní tending as many as 80, 000 head of cattle. After the order was expelled in 1767, the mission started to decline, and was finally destroyed by Brazilian raiders in the early 19th century. Many houses in the area are built of red sandstone blocks salvaged from mission buildings. Another historical note: José de San Martín, Argentina’s greatest national hero and known as ‘the Liberator, ’ was born here in 1778. Yapeyú is a great spot to relax; the sort of place where locals will greet you on the street.
