Arriving by bus at San Rafael’s scruffy terminal, you’re bound to be underwhelmed. Persevere, though – a few blocks away lies a busy, modern town whose streets are lined with majestic old sycamores and open irrigation channels. It’s not exactly Mendoza, but it’s getting there.
There is nothing to do in town (part of its allure) except wander its shady streets and plazas or while the day away in a café. There are, however, several esteemed wineries within biking distance that are well worth a visit. The city has also become a popular base for exploring (or driving through) the nearby Cañon de Atuel and for scenic rafting on the Río Atuel.
