Newark Newjersey USA Travel

. Most of the hotels are situated adjacent to the Airport or along the nearby roads. These hotels are typically moderate to budget priced and are far less expensive than hotels in Manhattan. When driving to New York City, I usually prefer hotels in Secaucus as they are closer to the city and the commute is quicker, but the hotels near Newark Airport are also suitable alternatives to staying in Manhattan.

Togean Islands Sulawesi Indonesia Travel

If you dreamt of an Indonesia with blissful beaches, plentiful coral and a place to live the life of a lotus eater, the Togean Islands fit the bill. This archipelago of beautiful coral and volcanic isles in the middle of Teluk Tomini is a riot of blue, gold and green. The undisturbed jungle shelters a variety of wildlife. The islands’ reefs support a rich diversity of marine life, and the people of the seven or so ethnic groups sharing this place are hospitable. Although the islands are difficult to reach, and the facilities are basic, many travellers fall in love with the Togeans and their lifestyle – and often end up staying a lot longer than they anticipated. However, like many parts of Indonesia, the coral has suffered at the hands of local fisherfolk over the past decade.

Banda Aceh Sumatra Indonesia Travel

The provincial capital of Banda Aceh is not frequently paired in the international press with good times. The city was close enough to the sea and the epicentre of the earthquake to have suffered a double punch from the 2004 Boxing Day disaster. The earthquake toppled most of the buildings taller than three storeys and the tsunami gobbled up coastal development across middle-class suburbs. In Banda Aceh alone, 61, 000 people were killed and development outside of the city centre was reduced to a wasteland in a matter of a few hours. This scale of destruction usually takes humans years of warfare to match.

Pulau Samosir Sumatra Indonesia Travel

If you want to trek, swim, explore traditional Batak villages, soak in hot springs, party or just chill with some cool local people, Pulau Samosir is your Eden. Your chickenbus beaten body will begin to unwind on the slow 8km ferry cruise over to this volcanic isle (it’s actually connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, but why quibble?) 900m above sea level. In the late ’90s, Tuk Tuk, the island’s resort town, rocked with full-moon ravers, but Thailand stole their thunder, and now empty hotels and quiet streets are the norm. Which means low prices, high value and tranquillity.

Tana Toraja Sulawesi Indonesia Travel

Tana Toraja is quite simply unique. A cultural island, hemmed in by mountains on all sides, the Toraja prove there is life after death with their elaborate ceremonies. Take the beauty of Bali, the houses of the Bataks in Sumatra and the megalithic cultures of Sumba and you’re still not even close. Cave graves, hanging graves, tau tau (life-sized wooden effigies) of the dead and buffalo carnage every summer; it’s macabre but mesmerising. This is a world unto itself.

Rawai Andaman Coast Thailand Travel

Okay, we won’t lie, there’s really no reason to stay on Rawai unless you’re booked in at Evason, spa resort extraordinaire. Frankly, the beach here kind of sucks compared to Patong or Kata (it can be really narrow at spots). Rawai was one of Phuket’s firs

Kirovsk Northern European Russia travel destination

Surrounded by the Khibiny mountains and with 2km-wide Lake Bolshoy Vudyavr spread at its feet, Kirovsk is almost an attractive town. If you throw back a couple of shots, squint and look in the right direction, you might just believe you’re in a Swiss alpine village. But Kirovsk was founded in 1929 for mining the world’s deposits of apatite, the raw material of phosphate fertilisers, and the lake is fronted by rail tracks and decaying industrial plants. Still, it has the best skiing and snowboarding in northwestern Russia, with a season that can last into June and prices that will make you want to stay all year.

Khabarovsk Russian Far East travel destination

After dozens of hours of taiga and the isolated Soviet towns of eastern Siberia, Khabarovsk can put a jolt in the most rail weary. A booming river town 25km from China, Khabarovsk gives off an air of a coastal, almost Mediterranean, resort with tree-lined streets, squares with fountains, 19th-century brick buildings, popular parks overlooking the wide Amur, and real Japan- ese sushi, imported here to serve the frequent Japanese business travellers.
