Once a popular holiday destination on a par with neighbouring Morocco, Algeria’s tourist industry all but disappeared when bitter civil war broke out in 1992. After a decade of conflict the situation improved slightly, and some access to the southern Sahara region has been possible in the last couple of years. However, independent travel without a vehicle is almost nonexistent, and after the tourist abductions of 2003 self-drive travellers need to be very aware of the risks involved.
Guinea’s landscape is spectacular. The country has some of the world’s few remaining tropical dry forests, and the rainforests that remain in the south are lush and verdant and full of wildlife. The waterfall-rich Fouta Djalon Plateau in the west has breathtaking scenery and some of the best hiking in West Africa. Guinea is not well endowed with beaches, but those it has are superb; and often empty. It’s capital, Conarky, while not heavy on the must-sees, has a vibrant nightlife and is safer than most other West African capitals.
This little village enjoys an almost achingly beautiful location surrounded by mountains on the southern banks of Lago Traful. The place really packs out in January, February and Easter, when booking accommodation three months in advance is advised. The rest of the year, you may just have it to yourself. Depending on what you’re into, November, December, March and April are great times to be here.
Jericoacoara, more simply known as ‘Jeri, ’ magnetizes travelers with its perfect combination of isolated location, stunning coastal scenery, enjoyable activities, good-value pousadas and restaurants, and nightlife. The village’s six sandy streets are wedged between a broad beach, a series of grassy hills and the majestic Pôr do Sol (Sunset) dune. It is an easy place to make new friends and many people end up staying longer than they planned. The high season runs from July to January and it is advised to make a room reservation during those months, as the accommodations can get full.
