Jericho

Located along the Capricorn Highway, between Emerald and Barcaldine, Jericho’s streets are named after scientists. The town is renowned for the Crystal Trumpeters, a striking sculpture constructed in memory of the Biblical Jericho, which was said to be destroyed by trumpeters marching around the city’s walls. Take a step back in time at the 36 car drive in, the smallest in Australia. Movies are shown once a month. Enjoy the peace sitting by a billabong under a Coolabah tree at Redbank Park – there are no ghosts to worry about here!

Jambin

The village of Jambin is located is located 29 kilometres north west of Biloela on the Burnett Highway. Originally set up as a supply depot for the railways, Jambin now forms an intricate part of the rich agriculture area. A visit to Jambin isn’t complete without a stop at the local pub. Located on the Burnett Highway, the local pub is a popular spot for a cool drink and break in your journey.

Mirani

Mirani is situated 38 kilometres west of Mackay in the Pioneer Valley and is the headquarters of the local shire council and a proud tidy town winner on several occasions. It boasts a museum and library, Post Office, Olympic sized swimming pool, Caravan Park, 18 hole golf course and three squash courts. The 112 year old Mirani Hotel can supply you with a cold beer and some interesting yarns from the locals. Groceries, meat, bakery and fuel supplies are all available. Mirani area highlights include; the Mirani Museum which brings to life the early pioneer lifestyle and also includes historical industry displays, Illawong Fauna & Flora Sanctuary (don’t miss animal feeding time!), Meadowsweet Herb Gardens, Kinchant Dam – a water sport wonderland which offers a resort with caravan and camp sites as well as cabins and which is home to Australia’s largest rustic bush furniture display, and the picture perfect Pioneer Valley Golf Course – watch out for the kangaroos! The Kungurri Hill Climb, a dirt bike race to find “King of the Mountain” is held once a year approximately 16 kilometres from Mirani township. The Wintermoon Folk Festival is held on the Labour Day long weekend every year at Cameron’s Pocket about a half hour drive from Mirani.

Nindigully

Nindigully is home to the historic Gully Hotel, established in 1864 the hotel is now believed to hold one of the longest continued licenses in Queensland. You can’t beat this for a classic outback-style pub with riverside fishing right out front. Nindigully is also the site where the Australian file, ‘Paperback Hero’ was filmed. The township also plays host to thousands of visitors who come for the New Years Eve Party, the annual Bull Ride and the Campdraft and Rodeo.

Broxburn

Broxburn is a rural community approximately five minutes drive from the town Pittsworth. Broxburn is know for it’s yearly event, the Broxburn Country Music Festival. The Broxburn Country Music Festival is usually held in May each year. Both well-known and local country artists perform over two days. The festival is held at Broxburn Reserve and visitors are welcome to camp overnight.

Jackson

An interesting sight in Jackson is the Old Play Shed, which is part of the original Jackson School Play Shed. At the present, in conjunction with the Year of the Outback, local history is being documented for display at the Old Play Shed. Jackson is situated about four hours travel from Brisbane and has a population of 46. The Jackson Public Library with Internet Access is open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. or by appointment. There is a public park with toilets.

Beerburrum

Beerburrum is located on the Glass House Mountains Road with access via the Bruce Highway. Industry includes pineapples, small crops, agriculture and tourism. many major attractions are close by as well as the Glass House Mountains National Park, State Forestry Lookouts, Matthew Flinders Park and the Wild Horse Lookout. Distance from Brisbane (State Capital): 59 kilometres.

Laura

Laura is a small town, with a population around 100 people on the Cape York Peninsula in Tropical North Queensland, and boasts the largest collection of prehistoric rock art in the world. The area around Laura is known for Quinkans, giant figures who according to Aboriginal legend, were spirits that lived in the crevices of rocks. They would emerge from the cracks to frighten people into properly. Basically the Quinkan spirits were ‘boogie men” of the Laura area. The Quinkan and Regional Cultural Centre is the first stop for all travellers to Laura. The Quinkan Centre showcases all aspects of Quinkan Country including Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage and the natural environment.

Bundaberg Region

The Bundaberg Coral Coast and Country Region encompasses a diversity of experiences, making it an ideal holiday location. True Gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef – day tours, resort stays, wilderness camping and multi-day live aboard dive cruises are all on offer. With its pristine environment the region is home to many marine creatures. Humpback whales pass close to the shoreline en route to Hervey Bay, and Australia’s largest mainland turtle rookery is situated at Mon Repos Beach. Childers, a National Trust town, is set on top of rolling hills of red soil, and the northern Town of 1770 is the first place that James Cook landed in Queensland. The Central and North Burnett provides a contrast to the coastal areas of the region with its rugged gorges, imposing mountain ranges and serene rural views. 15 National Parks preserve and provide a diverse range of experiences, from rugged mountain hikes, sleepy riverside campgrounds and the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef.

Turkey Beach

Turkey Beach is a small township that sits in Rodds Bay, two hours drive north of Bundaberg, from Brisbane. Follow the Bruce Highway north, about 550 kilometres, which takes around six hours. The turn off is 10 minutes out of Bororen and the road is dirt, but it is generally kept in good condition. At Turkey Beach there is a small shop which stocks the essentials, including fuel and ice. Accommodation is available, as there is no camping in the township, and there is a good boat ramp and a hard sandy beach to launch from. This is dinkum, throw-in-a-line-and-put-your-feet-up-territory with large mangrove inlets, estuaries and creeks. Turkey Beach located at Rodds Harbour is also a dedicated Dugong Sanctuary.
