Part of a 31, 250-sq-mile wilderness area, this park is a crossroad of mountain ranges: Wrangell, Chugach and St Elias. Extensive ice fields and 100 major glaciers spill from the peaks, including one bigger than the state of Rhode Island. This park is more difficult to visit than Denali National Park but, to those who make the effort, no less impressive due to its mountainous scenery and numerous opportunities for wilderness adventure whether on foot or in a raft.

Veracruz, the nation’s most important port, is located in Mexico’s Gulf coast region, 140 km (87 mi) southeast of state capital Xalapa (on Highway 140), and 390 km (242 mi) from Mexico City (on Highway 150). The climate is tropical and the average temperature is 25º C (77º F).
Named for nearby Tongariro National Park, this tiny outpost lies at the junction of SH4 and SH47, 15km from the hub of Whakapapa Village. In ski season the township is packed, but in summer it’s sleepy – despite being a great base for activities in and around the park.

At 2500 sq miles, Wood-Tikchik is the country’s largest state park. Thirty miles north of Dillingham, the park preserves two large systems of interconnecting lakes that are the important spawning grounds for Bristol Bay’s salmon. Wildlife in the park includes brown and black bears, beavers, moose, foxes and wolves. The fishing for arctic char, rainbow trout, dolly varden, grayling, salmon and northern pike is excellent. All five species of Pacific salmon spawn in the park.
Tuxtla Gutierrez, the state capital of Chiapas, is located in southern Mexico, 85 km (53 mi) east of San Cristobal de las Casas. The city has a pleasant semi-humid climate, with an average year-round temperature of 23º C (73º F).

The port city of Timaru is a handy stopping-off point halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin. Many travellers prefer to kick on 85km further south to the smaller, more charming Oamaru, but a few good restaurants and Timaru’s good-value motels means it’s worthy of a spot of travellers’ R & R. The town’s name comes from the Maori name Te Maru, meaning ‘The Place of Shelter’. No permanent settlement existed here until 1839 when the Weller brothers from Sydney set up a whaling station. The Caroline, a sailing ship that picked up whale oil, gave the picturesque bay its name.

Heading east from Boston, the road hugs the coast and passes through 8km of striking scenery. Waves chew at rocky headlands as magnificent frigate birds circle overhead like juvenile pterodactyls. Your destination is Long Bay, in one of the most dramatic settings in all of Jamaica. The 1.5km-wide bay has rose-colored sand, deep turquoise waters and breezes pushing the waves forcefully ashore. Canoes are drawn up on the beach, with fishing nets drying beside them.
