The adjacent provinces of Surin and Si Saket are dotted with Angkor-era Khmer ruins. Most are now looking rather tatty, but Khao Phra Wihan ranks among the northeast’s best attractions.
The region’s towns are rather less interesting, but Surin in particular makes a comfortable base for exploring the temples and provides the backdrop for the raucous Annual Elephant Roundup, held each November.
