The state capital lies on the equator, in a strategic position on the north side of the Rio Amazonas estuary. Though not really worth a trip on its own, anyone headed to French Guiana must pass though Macapá and won’t regret spending a day or two here, with its delectable sea breezes and a couple of nice sights. If you have extra time, visiting the San Antônio waterfall or forging a path to the national parks can be rewarding (though tough) before you head up to the border.
