Beyond its obvious appeal as a batch of pretty villages and winding country lanes, Northamptonshire has special relevance for fans of George Washington, Princess Diana, footwear and religious eccentrics. Its far-flung attractions also include some historic Saxon churches, honey-coloured historic towns with pretty thatched cottages and stately homes. It’s a great region for driving – attractions are interspersed throughout lovely countryside – and, as there’s no single tourism blockbuster, you don’t have to fight the masses to take in its charms.
