Yueyang Pavilion is located at the west door of Yueyang Ancient City. It faces Dongting Lake in the west and Yangtse River in the north. It is a famous scenic spot in China.
Yueyang Pavilion is one of the most famous pavilions in south China. It was built in 716 AD, the fourth year of Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasty. In 1045, the fifth year of Qingli Period in Song Dynasty, the governor of Baling County invited Fan Zhongyan to write an essay for Yueyang Pavilion, therefore came into being the famous essay “Notes to Yueyang Pavilion”. “Be the first to worry about troubles across the land, the last to enjoy universal happiness” has been recited by one generation after another. From then on, Yueyang Pavilion has been well-known all over the world.
Except for the beautiful sceneries and the stories of Yueyang Pavilion, its building of the main body is also very interesting. The pavilion is 19 meters high, with four pillars and three layers. It is of pure wooden structure, looking like an armet of ancient knight, which is very rare in the existed ancient architecture of China. In Yueyang Pavilion Scenic Spot, there remain Sanzui Pavilion, Xianmei Pavilion built in Qing Dynasty. There are also Huaifu Pavilion, Stele Corridor of Poems and Calligraph, waxwork of famous people, etc.
