Xiyuan Garden is a typical example of Buddhist temples in Suzhou. Xiyuan Garden is laid out a shapely plan, and consists of the Jiezhuanglu Temple and a pond for freeing captive animals. Situated at Xiatang Street outside the Jinmen Gate, it was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty and embraces such buildings as the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, and the Tripitaka Pavilion.
A kiosk is found in the center of the pool in the Xiyuan Garden, where visitors are drawn to free captive animals. Roaming freely in the pool are two Grouper turtles named Fangfang and Yuanyuan, which are in a more dangerous situation of extinction than Acipenser sinensis. There are only five alive in the world and four are in China. Pitifully, Fangfang has died recently with the age of more than four hundred years old. And instead of seeing Fangfang in the water, you can now see a bronze turtle by the pond which is made to commemorate Fangfang.
