The Private Garden of the Zhu Family has a total area of 20,000 square meters, with a floor space of about 5,000 square meters. It was first built in the late Qing Dynasty. It was enlarged in the early days of the Repbulic of China. It was the family house and ancestral hall built by Zhu Weiqing and his brother. It was started in the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty and completed in the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty.The whole building process lasted for about 30 years.
The main bulding takes on a layout of “four vertical and three horizontal lines”. It’s made up of many courtyard-style folk houses. On the right are ancestral temple, stage, pavilion, parlor and garden. All folk houses are in the collateral and composit style. It’s a typical Jianshui-style building group. All houses are in good order.
There are 42 small and large patios in total. Fastigiums are steep and eaves are warped. Roof beams are painted with elaborate patterns. The disposition of yard and hall is reasonable. Spatial landscape is not only abundant but also changeful. So it looks like a labyrinth. If a tourist enters here without the guide’s company, he will lose his way soon.
