Pingyao Confucian Temple was first built in the early years of Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty, and the Dacheng Palace was rebuilt in the 3rd Dading Year (1163) of the Jin Dynasty. It is our country’s oldest temple among all the existing temples at all levels, and is the only architecture of the Jin Dynasty among all the Confucian Temples in out country.
Originally Pingyao Confucian Temple was the family temple of the Confucius, the founder of the Confucianism in the Spring and Autumn Period, so it got the name Confucian Temple.
Throughout the history, Pingyao Confucian Temple had always been the location of the district school. Until the abolishment of the old examination-system in late years of the Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty, the county school was also abolished and changed into “Industrial school of Pingyao county”, the new educational system began to be put into practice. In 1923, some businessmen and merchants contributed some money to build “Pingyao Lizhi Middle School”, the head of the county Guo Xueqian inscribed the school name on the stele for the school. Then it was changed into Pingyao middle school run by the government, and moved its location to Chayuan Street. In 1950, Taiyue middle school got united with Pingyao middle school, and was again located in Confucian Temple. Most of the original architecture was preserved, only Jiuxing gate, Western knowledge learning class and provincial livestock office were dismantled. In late 1950s, people built the teaching building in Pingyao middle school, and demolished Chaoshan classics-learning academy, Jingyi Pavilion, and Zunjing Pavilion.
In 1997, the ancient city of Pingyao was listed in the world’s cultural heritage, Pingyao Confucian Temple was also listed into those major sites of cultural relics under state protection. In 2004, it was formally opened to tourists.
