Songpan ancient city is located at Jing’an town, Song’an County. It is one of major military place from ancient time till now. On the twelfth year of Hongwu’s reign in the Ming Dynasty, General Ding Yu applied to build a city to administrate the whole area of Songzhou prefecture, after he occupied it. On the second year, the Ming Government agreed to build the city and later combined Panzhou prefecture together with Songzhou. The walls of Songpan Ancient City were built at that time. It took several years to finish building the whole city.
Songpan Ancient City has the exterior city and interior city. The interior city was built according to the shape of Congshan Hill. And it looked like a triangle. The exterior city has the rectangle shape and was interlinked with the interior city. The whole length of the city is 6.2 kilometers, the height 12.5 meters, and the thickness 12 meters. The walls were made of local dark blue bricks, together with the thick liquid, which was made of sticky rice, lime, and Tung Oil. Inside of the wall, it was built with the huge stones, and earth was tempered together. Therefore, the walls are very strong. There are seven gates in the city, among which 5 are interior gates. All gates were made of huge stone slabs. It is inspected that the tops of each gate were made of wood, which were carved with lotus, and clouds, etc. On the inner of the gates, vivid running horses were carved. The ancient city is the important reference information on studying the local history and local affairs during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The scale of Songpan Ancient City is very large compared with those among the areas of minority regions. The length, height, thickness and the carvings of the walls top No. one in those minority areas, as well. It is the provincial historic and cultural site under the government protection.
Folk customs
Songpan custom belongs to Tibetan culture, but not completely the same as Tibet. The custom here has strong color of borderline culture, because it belongs to the interim area from Tibetan area to Han area, and the interim area from nomadizing to farming. 500 years ago, the ancestors of Jiuzhaigou moved from Ali, and settled down in Songpan. They created the great and unique Kangba Culture together with nationalities of Qiang, Hui, and Han.

Chinese caterpillar fungus ducks, Thunberg Fritillary Bulbs chicken, sticky rice pancakes with potatoes, mineral water, etc.
Festivals:
The Temple Fair is held at Zharu Temple on every fifth of January of Chinese lunar calendar. Mamei Fair is a grand religious ceremony at Zharu Temple in every May.
