The site of First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is located in Xingye Road. It is a typical residential building of the ‘1920s in urban Shanghai, a stone-framed door type built of wood and bricks. It has been listed as a key historical site under state protection.
On July 23, 1921, the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held here. Delegates from different Communist groups: Mao Zedong, Dong Biwu, Li Da, He Shuheng, Chen Tanqiu and Wang Jinmei, altogether 13 members, came over to attend the meeting to discuss the Party of China. During the meeting, owing to the interruption by spies from the French police, the meeting had to be cancelled and later resumed in a boat on the Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing Country, Zhejiang Province.
In 1999 the city government conducted reconstruction of the memorial hall at the site. The new memorial hall is 12-m high with 2 stories at the front and 3 stories at the back. The front lobby is 300 sq.m. in area. On the 200-sq.m. ground floor, is a lecture hall equipped with TV recorder. On the second floor is the newly built exhibition hall of the Communist Party of China. On display are photos of the delegates to the Founding of the Communist Party of China, First National Congress, several hundreds of precious relics, documents and. There is a wax statue hall, showing the 15 attendants to the congress (2 were the representatives from the Communist International) sitting round the table. Young Comrade Mao Zedong, holding a paper in his hand, is standing in the middle. It reproduces the historical scene of the day when the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China were holding.
