Briefing of the Spot:
Shijing Temple was established in 1957, 108 Buddhist scriptures were engraved in tablets and stone walls in the temple. There are 324 Buddha sculptures in the temple. A stone wall in the temple is 2 meters high and 1 meter wide, and is square in shape with a perimeter of 320 meters. The largest stone wall of Buddhist sculptures on the right side of the scripture storage hall is 165 meters long. Engraved on it is a classic Buddhist scripture named Bkav-vgyur Scripture. In the east of the wall, there is a stone mound which is 9 meters long, 9 meters wide and 10 meters high; the classical Bkav-vgyur Scripture was engraved on it. To its east stands a stone wall, on which “Tado” Scripture was engraved for 108 times. To the west of the largest stone wall, there is another stone wall with a length of 15 meters, a width of 1.30 – 1.58 meters and a height of 1.2 meters, on which 17 Buddhist scriptures have been engraved.
The whole Shijing Temple was composed of four parts, namely “Ganzhu’er Shijing Yard”, “Shilun Buddhist Pagoda”, “Shijing Buddha’s Niches”, and “Juguo Altar Lamp”. The main construction of Shijing Yard is situated in the north; it is comprised of four stone walls and gates. On every wall, besides Buddhist scriptures, there are also sculptures of Buddha and niches. In the center of the yard, a tall Shilun Buddhist Tower was built with stone. The tower is unique in appearance and elegant in style. The top of the tower is composed of drawings of stone wheel, the moon and the sun. The body of the tower is rectangular; below the bottom of the tower is a small basement. In front of the tower, there is a huge wok; butter light is on all the year round.
The characters are elegantly, smoothly and forcefully carved on the stone walls. All the drawings in the stone wall are in perfect proportion. The engraved lines are natural and elegant. The sculptures include Buddha, Bodhisattva, disciples, and servants and so on. The sculptures are obviously featured by Buddhism. The lines are quite simple; the countenances of figures differ greatly from one another, displaying the wisdom and artistic talent of the Tibetan people. The sculptures are not only attractive for tourists, but also valuable for researching Tibetan calligraphy and the history of Tibetan Buddhism.
