Commercial fishing has made Dillingham the largest community in the Bristol Bay region. The first cannery was built in 1884 and today Icicle, Peter Pan, Trident and Unisea all operate fish-processing plants in the city, handling mostly salmon.
Dillingham serves as the jumping-off point for trips to Wood-Tikchik State Park, Round Island and the region’s numerous fishing lodges. The airport is located 2.5 miles west of town and the only place you can drive to is Lake Aleknagik, the southernmost lake in the Wood River chain and connected to Dillingham by a 23-mile gravel road that was built in 1960. At the end of the road you’ll find Lake Aleknagik State Recreation Site, which has a free seven-site campground.
