Having a unique style, Dong villages in Sanjiang are different from Yao villages, which are generally located in high mountains, and Han villages, which are established on flat ground. They scatter between mountains and water in beautiful mountain district. Dong people live in mass, normal villages containing one to two families and big ones five to six families. Houses in the village are built with fir, one close to another. It is so close that, at some places, people are free from sunshine in fine day and wearing bamboo hat in raining day. The houses are also spacious, consisting of 3 stories in general. The first floor is for animals and sundries, the second for people to live in and the third for keeping grain. Since houses in Dong village stand between mountains and water, seeing from far, tourists will find layer upon layer of eaves higher and higher, connecting as a whole. Something interesting is that looking from the lowest place or the entrance of the village, you can directly see the doors and windows of the houses at the farthest row, and nothing will block your view. Outside the village, there are generally green old trees and gurgling brook, which help to form the graceful, quiet and attractive scenery of Dong village. 19 km from the county, the eight Dong villages, normally called “Chengyang Eight Villages”, are the most famous Dong villages in Sanjiang, which consist of Maan, Pingtan, Ping, Yan, Dong, Da, Pingpu and Jichang under administration of the three committees of villagers of Pingyan, Chengyang and Pingpu. They occupy an area of over 30 sq. km, having in total 2,197 families with a population of 9,701, containing 2000 Diaojiaolou (house projecting over the water), 8 drum towers and 7 wind and rain bridges, including Chengyang Yongji Bridge, one of famous historic bridges of the world. The rich Dong customs, simple and brilliant Dong culture and beautiful natural environment of the place attract tourists from various places in the world, making the place a scenic spot receiving most numerous foreign tourists in Liuzhou.
