Dechang Bell and Drum Tower is a well preserved ancient building in Liangshan Yi Autonomous. It was built in 18th year of Daoguang (1838 A.D.) in Qing Dynasty. At first, there were Kuixing Attics in the south, north and middle of the main street and Dechang Bell and Drum Tower was the middle one. Actually, it is not a real bell and drum tower, but because Zhong (means middle) in Chinese has the same pronunciation as bell, people called it as Dechang Bell and Drum Tower by mistake. Dechang Bell and Drum Tower was destroyed in a fire of the 2nd year of Tongzhi (1863 A.D) in Qing Dynasty and it was rebuilt in 2nd year of Guangxu(1887 A.D.) in Qing Dynasty, but unfortunately, it was destroyed again. Today’s Dechang Bell and Drum Tower was built in 2nd year of Xuantong(1910- 1912) in Qing Dynasty. It takes an area of 142 square meters and 24 meters high. The base is made from bricks. The gate is 7 meters high, 4 meters wide and connecting to the front street. On the gate, there are 2 inscribed boards. The north one says????(it means to the south, it leads to Mengzhi)and the south one says????(it means to the north, it leads to the capital). There are 3 floors above the base. There are inscribed boards on these floors as well. On the first floor it says????(it means clouds all come and gather here), on the second floor it says????(means as bright as the stars )and on the third floor it says??and??(ode to the wind and moon). There are great many of swallows in Dechang County, so people call Dechang as Swallow City. What is more, Dechang Bell and Drum Tower is the paradise of swallows. Thousands of swallows built their homes and live happily in this magnificent building.
