Before the area was liberated by people’s liberation army, people lived in hardships and impoverishment. The natural environments were quite severe and disadvantaged with barren mountains and dirty rivers, ridges and ravines crisscross on the whole slope of the mountain. After it was liberated, local people became the master of themselves. Under the guidance of Mao Zedong Thought, the Dazhai people led by Chen Yonggui and Guo Fenglian were determined to put an end to the situation of poverty and backwardness. They ventured to fight the nature, by their laborious work and ultimate fortitude, they finally conquered the severe natural environments and built layers of layers terraces on the slope of ridges and ravines. Besides, they have also succeeded in irrigating the land by water diversion and changed the reality of keeping survival by sole reliance on nature. Therefore, they were highly praised and acknowledged by President Mao Zecdong, who in 1964 called on the whole nation to “learn from Dazhai in agriculture”, as a result, Dazhai became a flag of the whole country’s agriculture.
At present, Dazhai has become a picturesque park village. Layers over layers terraces are covered by green crops, numerous pools spread all over the land with gentle and charming sights for their clear and blue water as well as undulating waves; the plantations are luxuriant and green with dense trees and plants; and large area of orchards are full of fruits. Dazhai boasts tidy cave dwelling houses, neat and clean streets, as well as warm and hospital people. What’s more, the infrastructure construction such as traffic and communication has been improved to a large extent. In this sense, Dazhai has become a full-blown Agro-tourism and Sight-seeing area. Chen Yonggui Tomb, Dazhai Exhibition Hall, Guo Moruo poem stele, spotted Deer Field and six commemorating and sightseeing pavilions have been successively built in Dazhai,. They have also opened the former residence of Chen Yonggui, Zhou Enlai former dwelling place to the outside. All of the above scenic spots have made Dazhai more attractive and colorful.
