The Confucian Temple in Jieyang was the highest-class institution of higher learning in ancient Jieyang. It was originally built in the 10th year of the Shaoxing Reign of the Song Dynasty (1140 A.D.). It adopted the layout of the axis and palace-style construction with high foundation. The main buildings include the Screen Wall, the Lingxing Gate, the Pan Bridge, the Ban Pool, the Dacheng Gate, the West Side Room, the East Side Room, the Dacheng Hall and the Chongsheng Ancestral Temple. The Confucian Temple is splendid and solemn with red tiles and green eaves. It’s larger than anything else of the same kind in Guangdong Province. It has comparatively high scientific value and artistic standard. A lot of tablets which were written by emperors of Chinese dynasties are hung in the Dacheng Hall. There are 12 statues of ancient Chinese philosopher. The statue of Confucius is situated in the center of the main hall. On the left are the statues of Yan Zi and Zeng Zi. On the right are the statues of Si Zi and Meng Zi. The Confucian Temple is also a revolutionary site. Zhou Enlai, the former Premier of China, once worked here during the Second Eastern Expedition in 1925. It’s a cultural relic site under province-level protection in Guangdong now.
