The Tun Bao ancient buildings are located in the gorge with 2 cols, the front col is the eastern gate of the Yunshan Tun and back one is the southern gate. Lying in opposite sides of the gorge, the ancient domestic houses are parallel distributed up the mountain, built in forms of monomer, sanhe yuan and sihe yuan. On the other hand, ancient buildings in Benzhai back on to the brae of the Qingshan Mountain with 2 natural barriers of the Sancha River in the front and the Qingshan Mountain behind. In the whole group of buildings, there are 7 tall watchtowers made up of huge ashlars.
History
The Tun Bao dates back to the Ming dynasty. Setting up the dynasty just then, in order to strengthen the border area, Zhuyuanzhang, the emperor of the Ming dynasty, sent an expedition troop to Yunnan. The army set up their supreme headquarters in Anshun after arriving in Guizhou. After crushing the rebellion in Yunnan, Zhuyuanzhang ordered the army to maintain themselves by farming on the spot and establish villages in great numbers around the city, farming at usual and fighting in war. With the continuous improvement of this policy and people’s perseverance, the army post gradually formed military villages in names of “tun, bao, guan, wei, shao, suo, pu (titles of military building in Chinese)” and etc. Hundreds of years passing by, the Tun Bao People who have lived here for several generations have created the Tun Bao culture, a hybrid of central plains culture and local folklore culture.
Scenic Spots
A masterpiece of stone buildings—Tun Bao domestic houses
Tun Bao domestic houses are distinguished by the wide application of stone. Each house is a stone castle and each village is a stone city. Its buildings reach the peak of stone crafts. Looked down at the high place, white houses are dotted in order. Entering the village, tourist will see a world of stone.
The most obvious characteristic of the sihe yuan is its completely close layout. The domestic houses consist of chao door, main room and wing rooms. The door assumes the shape of “ba (Chinese character in shape of an isosceles trapezium)”, huge stones supporting the carefully carved door eave on both sides. In the tall and big main room, there are many patterns carved in wooden window mullions and doors, symbolizing fortune and blessings. Along tow sides of the main room are the wing rooms, in front of which there are “daozuos (a kind of Chinese building)”. Rooms form a square with a patio in the center.
In the village, alleys are crisscrossed and connected with each other, directly leading to streets, forming a defense system consisting o f “points”, “lines” and “surfaces”. In walls facing the alleys, there are small windows in function of loopholes and letting in lights. The low stone doors can efficiently block the enemy’s attacks. Until now, the village still remains many crenels and emplacements.
The “alive fossil” of drama–Dixi Drama
Dixi, Tiaoshen in common parlance, is an ancient drama containing functions of drama, offering sacrifices and entertainment. At the gate or a vacant lot of their village, Tun Bao People perform Dixi in open air, which is very wooden and straight. They adopt artistic methods of singing, reading, doing and fighting to present the stories and legends of loyal people in Chinese history, which you can read in books such as “the Romance of Entitling Gods” “the Strife between Chu and Han” “the Romance of the Three States” “Xuegang Rebel the Tang Dynasty” “Legend of Loyalism ”. Living history—Tun Bao costumes
Women’s clothing obviously presents the distinct Tun Bao costumes. They often wear bulky long robes of knee-length with loose sleeves. The necklines, cuffs and front parts of garments are embroidered with laces. They gird waist with a broche ribbon that hanging to knees. They do up their long hair in circles with jewel inserted such as jade hair clasp. The difference between married and unmarried women is that unmarried girls wear their hair in a single braid while married women coil up their hair with forehead shaved and eyebrow pared. In addition, women usually adorn themselves with earrings, bracelets, rings, oversleeves, long skirts and fabric shoes with phoenix design on its long upper and hamulus on its toecap, which is made in methods of embroidering, patching, hollowing, inlaying, furnishing with piping and etc.
Portable and storable food—Tun Bao food
Traditional foods of Tun Bao People are of great variety. The principal foods include rice paste, gao cake and corn cake. Non-stable foodstuffs contain preserved ham, sausage, blood bean curd, dried and salted vegetable, dried lobster sauce, rotten capsicum and etc., which are all storable. Every family in Tun Bao have the custom of making preserved ham, blood bean curd and sausage, which are indispensable when entertaining honored guests.
