The ancient city embosomed with hills has magnificent and peculiar passes and openings. It is bounded by Dehang Miao Village, Jishou, Mengdong River, Yongshun, and Fanjing Mountain, Guizhou. It is also the only road to Huaihua, Jishou, and Tongren, Guizhou. It was acclaimed as the most beautiful little city in China by the famous New Zealand author, Louis Ally.
The beauty of ancient Fenghuang City rests in its great age. Fenghuang is situated on the borders of three provinces. It is the communications center of Hunan and Guizhou. Since ancient times, it is a place of strategic importance on borders and stationing troops. Way back during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods, it was “Wuxi Miao barbarian place” which may be said the foremost position of enlightening barbarians in ancient China. The well-preserved buildings of Ming and Qing Dynasties in the city, and the quiet and faraway pavement laid with black flagstones along the river bank have engraved the great changes of Fenghuang. Even the utensils easily saw in the domestic house may have witnessed the history with flames of war and smoke of gunpowder.
The beauty of ancient Fenghuang City also rests in its fused humanity atmosphere. Miao, Tu, and Han people live together harmoniously. Tender girls and honest young men naturally display the hospitality and characteristic culture of their nationality. The beauty of ancient Fenghuang City even more rests in its peace. It is surrounded on four sides by hills. The houses facing the water wind about it. Louis Ally has said, “Town by the riverside enjoys the innate lasting appeal and intelligence, let alone by the riverside of Tuojiang which is so clear and so quiet.” Time ambles along. Then the noise of the city and the secular distracting thought slip by quietly with the leisure water of Tuojiang, and only the tranquility lost for ages is left.
