Daming Temple was constructed in the ruling period of Xiaowu Emperor of Nanchao Dynasty (from 457 BC to 464 BC). Since that year when the temple was first put into construction was named Daming Year, the temple was therefore called Daming Buddhist Temple. For over 1500 years the name of the temple had been changed for many times. For example, in Sui dynasty, it was called Qiling Temple or Xisi Temple; in Tang Dynasty, it was named Diping Temple; in Qing Dynasty, it was then changed into Qiling Temple again so as to avoid the address of “Daming”, the name of the previous ruling regime. It was not until 1980 that Daming Temple regained its original name.
Daming Temple, according to the different features of its scenery, could be divided into four sections: the religion section, the literator section, the east garden section, and the west garden section.
The religion section is the center of the whole temple. By now a complex of constructions in Qing Dynasty featuring Daxiong Palace has been developed. On the square in front of the temple stands a high and lofty pailou, also known as paifang, a decorated archway of a memorial or decorative nature in ancient China. There is a plague on it with an inscription of “Qiling Site”. At either side of pailou stands a stone lion which is exquisite and lovely. The mountain gate of Daming Temple in fact refers to Tianwang Palace; there is Mile Buddha (Maitreya) which looks amiable and benevolent. At the back of Tianwang Palace stands the Daxiong Grand Palace, in the courtyard of which grow towering trees of ancient times. They are cypress and box respectively in the east and west with ding, an ancient cooking vessel mainly for decoration, in between. Wreathed by the scent of burning joss-sticks and muyu (“Wooden fish” Woodblock), you will feel your bosom is filled with piety and respect. Daxiong Grand Palace is the most magnificent among all palaces. There is the sitting statue of Sakyamuni in the middle, and status of Jiaye Buddha (Mahakasyapa) and Anan Buddha at both sides. In the east of the palace sits the statue of Yaoshi Buddha and in the west, Amitabha.
In the section of literators, there are rich cultural relics, such as Pingshan Hall where the famous ancient poet Ouyang Xiu once gave lectures, Gulin Hall initiated by Great poet Su Dongpo, and Ouyang Ancestral Temple, etc. Therefore a lot of famous lines and calligraphies could be found here.
The East Garden Section lies in the northwest of Yangzhou. It features Qiling Pagoda as the main and unique scenic spot because it is the place enjoying the highest altitude in Yangzhou and is the representation of Daming Temple. Qiling Pagoda is believed as a sacred site which concentrates or contains the miraculous things of the world. It takes the construction style in Tang Dynasty; there are three rooms, four pillars, one gate, and two windows in the four directions within the palace. Standing on the component pagoda of the palace and taking a bird-eye’s view, you will enjoy the wide field of vision and fantastic scenery of Yangzhou City. You would probably feel reluctant to leave after ascending the pagoda. The west garden scenic section is characterized by “The Fifth Best Spring under Heaven” as its main scenic spot. It is circled by waters and accompanied by tablets and pavilions in the ruling years of Kangxi and Qianlong Emperor. The scenic section also features unique layout of scenic spots in an uneven manner; the clear lakes, emerald trees, and graceful lotus flowers are dotted with each other; you would feel there are just too many things to appreciate and for aftertaste.
In Daming Temple, the four scenic sections are different from each other in terms of scenery and function. The reasonable overall arrangement of Daming Temple not only gives prominence to the Buddhist status of Daming Temple and helps introduce the power of Buddha, but offer people the opportunity to appreciate the scenery of Buddhist temples.
