Xiguan is the name local Cantonese give to the place in the central Liwan District located outside the West Gate of Guangzhou city at ancient times which now starts from the Xicun Village at the north to the Pearl River at the south, the Renmin Road at the east, and the Xiaobeijiang at the west. There are many typical ancient houses in traditional style here, bright and majestic with delicate ornament, which used to be the residence of rich men. There is respectively a Qingyun Alley at both sides of the ancient houses that implies a meteoric rise of a career or social position. The Qingyun Alley is also called Leng (cold) Alley, Huo (fire) Alley and Shui (water) Alley, which performs the multiple functions of airing, fireproofing, draining, lighting, air-curing, transporting and planting and so on.
The number of the remained Xiguan Ancient Houses has gone down to less than 100 from more than 800 houses since the end of the Qing Dynasty to the very beginning of the Republic of China. Among all these ancient houses the one at No. 15 Shisanfu Main Road is worth visiting most.
