It wasn’t long ago that New Zealanders maligned the town of Twizel, just south of Lake Pukaki. The town was built in 1968 to service construction of the nearby hydroelectric power station, and was due to be abandoned in 1984 when the construction project was completed. Now the town’s tenacious residents are having the last laugh as house prices are increasing and new lakeside subdivisions are being built to take advantage of the area’s relaxed lakes and mountains lifestyle. Mt Cook is just 63km down the road, and Twizel’s range of affordable accommodation and a few good eateries make it a good alternative to staying in more expensive Mt Cook Village. Twizel as a travellers’ nirvana. Who would have thought?

Read more for detail and Video tours from others.

Right in town is the Twizel i-SITE (03-435 3124; www.twizel.com; Twizel Events Centre; 9am-6pm daily Oct-Apr, 10am-4pm Tue-Sat May-Sep; ), which has internet access. In late January the town hosts the lively Mackenzie Summer Salmon and Wine Festival.

A grand expanse of forest and alps sweeping from Anchorage to Fairbanks and Canada, the Interior has been immortalized by poets, picked over by miners and popularized in the quirky 1990s TV series Northern Exposure. Here is Alaska’s heartland: dogsleds and gold pans, roadhouses and fish wheels, moose on the side of the road and a seemingly endless stretch of pavement disappearing into the mountains.

The main route into this region is George Parks Hwy (Hwy 3), which winds 358 miles from Anchorage to Fairbanks, passing Denali National Park. The Richardson Hwy (Hwy 4) extends 366 miles south from Fairbanks to Valdez while the Glenn Hwy (Hwy 1) completes this Interior triangle by extending 189 miles from Anchorage to Glennallen. All the Interior roads are lined with turnoffs, campgrounds and hiking trails serviced by small towns with limited facilities and high prices.

New York City is a great place to begin a driving tour of northeastern USA. There are three major airports serving this city, JFK International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark International just across the river in New Jersey. That makes it easy to fly there from just about anywhere in the world.

Atlantic City was once famous as a popular beach resort with seaside accommodations and summer vacation homes. Today, it is more famous for its collection of lavish gambling casinos and high quality entertainment. Atlantic City resembles Las Vegas on a much smaller scale. You can find some really good entertainment with famous performers and renown acts especially on weekends.

New York City offers many attractions like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Times Square, the United Nations, Broadway Theater, museums, art galleries, thousands of restaurants and plenty of night life. I suggest you do not rent a car until you see all of the sights in the city. A car can be a liability in New York. Driving in Manhattan can be a nightmare and parking is very expensive. It is better to use the public transportation to see the city, then rent a car when you are ready to leave. You can pick up a rental car at several locations in Manhattan or you can take a bus to Newark Airport to rent a car and completely avoid driving in New York City.
Click here for hotels in New York City!

Baltimore is an old seaport city situated on the western shore of the great Chesapeake Bay. It is 200 miles (300 km) south of New York City and just 35 (60 km) miles north of Washington DC. Route 95 takes you from Baltimore to New York in less than four hours, to Philadelphia in less than two hours and to Washington DC in less than one hour. This is another good place to start your driving tour, as the local Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is a gateway to many international and domestic flights.

If you begin your road trip at another location and drive to New York City, I suggest you stay at a hotel in Secaucus New Jersey just a few miles from Manhattan. You can take advantage of nicer lodgings at lower prices, park your car for free and ride a bus into the city.

Kennedy Spacecenter Visitor Complex. The John F. Kennedy space center is located on the central Atlantic coast of Florida about 50 miles (75 km) due east of Orlando and midway between Miami and Jacksonville. The actual spaceport and launch facilities are located on nearby Cape Canaveral, a vast peninsula with restricted public access. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, just outside of the cape is open to the public daily from 9 AM until 5 PM. It includes many exhibits, films and displays, plus it offers opportunities to tour the actual spaceport and launch facility.

Bus tours of the Kennedy Spaceport Launch Complex depart from the visitor center at frequent intervals and are included with your admission. The tours take you to the huge vehicle assembly building where the gigantic rockets are fully assembled prior to launch, to the huge crawler platforms that slowly transport the fully assembled rockets several miles out to the launch sites, and to views of one of the launch platforms.

The admission prices are $29 for adults and $19 for children. That includes access to all exhibits and films plus a bus tour of the spaceport and launch facility. Normally, tickets are readily available at the space center or you can purchase them on line from this web page: www.kennedyspacecenter.com/groupsCorporate/index.asp

You can watch an actual space launch if you are in the area on the right date. It is possible to park along the highway (with thousands of other spectators) several miles from the cape and see the rocket liftoff and disappear into space. You can no longer get passes that permit you to park along the causeway on the cape due to new security precautions. If you are really eager to see a launch up-close, you can go to the Space Center web site and purchase one of the limited number of launch viewing passes that allow you to view the launch from a special visitors area on the cape.

For an extra twenty dollars, you can choose one of the “NASA Up Close” tours that are narrated by an expert guide. All of the tours are restricted on launch days, so you should check the launch schedule before planning your visit. You can find the Space Shuttle launch schedule on this page: http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/schedule/schedule.htm

During the week, and especially in the nonsummer months, the crowds disperse, hotel prices drop and the place takes on a much more relaxed feel.

First impressions of the extremes to which this resort town has taken itself can be abhorrent. But, after spending a few days on its comically packed beaches, watching street performers on the beachside Plaza Colón or exploring the wonders of the port, it’s hard not to give in to the adoration the country feels for the place. If summer crowds aren’t your bottle of lotion, visit in spring or autumn, when prices are lower and the area’s natural attractions are easier to enjoy.

While much of the city’s population is typically poor, parts of town have a notably prosperous feel. The spacious new-town avenues have a wide choice of restaurants, eagerly grazed by the food-crazy cochabambinos, and the bar life is lively, driven by students and young professionals. Despite this, Cochabamba remains a very affordable city, with prices far below those in Sucre or La Paz.

The city’s name is derived from the Quechua khocha pampa, meaning ‘swampy plain.’ Cochabamba lies in a fertile green bowl, 25km long by 10km wide, set in a landscape of fields and low hills. To the northwest rises Cerro Tunari (5035m), the highest peak in central Bolivia. The area’s rich soil yields abundant crops of maize, barley, wheat, alfalfa, and orchard and citrus fruits. Cochabamba is famous for its chicha, a refreshing fermented drink made from maize. It gets drunk in liberal quantities by campesinos (subsistence farmers) at village fiestas.

Most travelers come here to snorkel down crystal-clear rivers, but there are dozens of other ways to enjoy the scenery, from rappelling and rafting to horseback riding and bird-watching. Despite its popularity, the town is still a great place to kick back outside peak holiday periods (December to February).

Only local travel agencies are authorized to hire guides to the area’s attractions, so you’re obliged to book tours through them. The main street is lined with agencies, all charging the same. The better ones include Muito Bonito Tourismo (255-1645; Rua Coronel Pilad Rebua 1448) and Ygarapé Tour (255-1733; Rua Coronel Pilad Rebua 1853). River-trip prices include snorkel gear but don’t include transportation, so try tacking onto a group that has already organized transport.
