If you’re looking for a brief escape from the fun-in-the sun ethos of Negril, spend an hour or two down the caves at Roaring River Park (cave tours adult/child US$15/8; 8am-5pm). This natural beauty spot contains mineral waters that gush up from the ground in a meadow full of water hyacinths and water lilies. A stone aqueduct takes off some of the water, which runs turquoise-jade. Steps lead up a cliff face gashed by the mouth of a subterranean passage lit by electric lanterns (you can enter the caves only with guides from the cooperative). Inside, a path with handrails leads down to chambers full of stalagmites and stalactites. Take your swimming gear to sit in the mineral spring that percolates up inside the cave, or in the ‘bottomless’ blue hole outside the cave. Harmless fruit bats roost in the recesses.

As you arrive an official guide will meet you to show the way to the ticket office, and then around the gardens and cave; ignore the touts who congregate outside posing as tour guides. It has secure parking, a reception lounge, changing rooms, playground and crafts shops. A restaurant serves cheap Jamaican fare, as does Chill Out View, on a hill overlooking the burbling spring.

Climbing up to Jamaica’s fifth largest town, you’re immediately conscious of the almost springlike coolness that marks Manchester Parish’s capital and drew many British settlers in the 19th century. In the 1950s, these expats were joined by North Americans working in the bauxite industry, giving the town a cosmopolitan aura.

In fact, this midsized hub, convenient to so many attractions, is poised to be touristy, but isn’t. You might find that good or bad, but in its very uneventfulness Trelew does offer the traveler a welcome pause. After the obligatory visit to the city’s top-notch dinosaur museum, you’re free to frequent the ice-cream parlors, lounge on the verdant square and check out a few historic buildings. The region’s commercial center, it is also a convenient base for visiting the Welsh villages of Gaiman and Dolavon. Founded in 1886 as a railway junction to unite the Río Chubut valley with the Golfo Nuevo, Trelew (tre-ley-ooh) owes its easily mispronounced name to the Welsh contraction of tre (town) and lew (after Lewis Jones, who promoted railway expansion). During the following 30 years, the railway reached Gaiman, the Welsh built their Salón San David (a replica of St David’s Cathedral, Pembrokeshire), and Spanish and Italian immigrants settled in the area. In 1956 the federal government promoted Patagonian industrial development and Trelew’s population skyrocketed.

Many arrive here expecting to find a city of businesspeople and throbbing traffic, but in truth, though Santa Cruz is the country’s business center and most affluent city, it has kept its tameness. The locals still lounge on the main square, restaurants close for siesta and little stores line the porch-fronted houses and sell cheap local products.

Santa Cruz is certainly not where you’ll find the Bolivia you see in pictures, and you won’t brush shoulders with a llama (apart from in a zoo or on your plate), but this is the place with the largest population diversity in the country – from the overall-wearing Mennonites strolling the streets past local Goth kids, to a Japanese community, Altiplano immigrants, Cuban doctors, descendants of ex-Nazi runaways, Brazilian immigrants, bearded Russians, and fashionable cruceños (Santa Cruz locals) turning sharp corners in their SUVs.

Puerto Ayora looks and feels like a fairly prosperous mainland Ecuadorian coastal town, that is if it weren’t for the sea lion, iguana and albatross or two that lounge around the waterfront. Most of the hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities line Avenida Charles Darwin and the airport is on Isla Baltra, around an hour away to the north.

The spectacular Peak Range creates a dramatic backdrop to Capella. Make Capella your base while exploring the Central Highlands. The ‘Peak Downs’ Homestead is Australia’s largest restored shingle roofed station homestead. Built in 1869 from local pit sawn spotted gum, the Homestead is a tribute to 19th century carpentry. The wall wood slats are cut on a 12 degree angle top and bottom and mortised into the square studs. The ‘Peak Downs’ Homestead is in the Capella Pioneer Village complex at the northern end of Capella’s main street. The village is also home to the ‘Gordon Downs’ Woolshed and a comprehensive collection of tractors and machinery used to open up the Central Highlands grain industry following World War two. Unwind and enjoy our local ‘beach’. The Capella Aquatic Centre’s five free electric barbeque areas are near the wading pool, plunge pool, shallow pool and the Olympic pool. Pull up a sun lounger and relax with a coffee from the Centre’s cafe. Discover the volcanic mountain peaks, huge coal mining activities, fascinating sapphire fields and broadacre farming panoramas along the four self-drive tours. Don’t miss the light pole and wall murals along the Peak Downs Street town walk, or take a bird-watching tramp east along Capella Creek. The Cultural Centre hosts many talented nation performers, or you can take in a latest release movie on the weekend or just pop in and have a look around.

Vibrant and diverse entertainment all day, every day Kings Cross, the most densely populated square kilometre in Australia, buzzes with nightclubs, live music, adult entertainment and more than two hundred of the city’s finest restaurants, bars and cafes. Australia’s best known entertainment district never sleeps and holds appeal for late night revellers, jet-lagged travellers and the energetic in-crowd with bars that attract the stars, and restaurants by signature chefs such as Neil Perry and Luke Mangan. Away from the bright lights, the Cross boasts some fine examples of colonial and art deco architecture such as Elizabeth Bay House and Tusculum House. Nearby Woolloomooloo offers a multitude of waterfront al fresco dining experiences along the restored Woolloomooloo Wharf providing stunning views of the city skyline and harbour surrounds. Inside is the ultra modern five star hotel, W Sydney and the stylish Water Bar, tended by master cocktail makers. Pamper yourself at Spa Chakra, a premier day spa located inside W Sydney. Woolloomooloo is also home to Harry’s Café de Wheels. Busy til the early hours serving the post-party crowd, Harry’s is more than a pie shop, it’s an institution not to be missed. Key Experiences
