Its reputation as a well-heeled holiday getaway has earned it the nickname ‘Kensington-on-Sea’ after the posh district of London, and its gorgeous sandy beach, pebble-walled cottages, cannon-dotted clifftop and rows of beachfront bathing huts are all undeniably picturesque. The occasional whiff of roasting malt is also a reminder that Southwold is home to the Adnams Brewery (727200; www.adnams.co.uk; Adnams Pl, Sole Bay Brewery), so what better excuse to try its creamy ales in one of the town’s old coaching inns.

At its heart is a large market square surrounded by handsome buildings and steep-walled alleyways originally used to funnel the sheep into the fair. Today the sheep have been replaced with tourists and instead of farmers brokering deals the town is full of antique shops, pretentious boutiques, tearooms and delis. It’s great if you’re on a pit stop from a coach tour, but all a little artificial if you’re looking for true Cotswold charm.

Prepare to jostle for elbow room with coachloads of tourists in the antique houses associated with England’s most famous wordsmith – certainly during summer and on most weekends. But if you choose your time, this pretty, historic market town should definitely be on your ‘to visit’ list: be sure to take in a play if you’re hitting the Shakespeare trail. It is also a handy base for exploring the mighty Warwick and Kenilworth Castles and the picturesque Cotswold countryside.

It’s a place with a rather strange split personality; part faded Victorian resort, part corporate anytown and part mass-market tourist holiday park, where wrinkly day-trippers and holidaying coach parties rub shoulders with stag parties, boozed-up clubbers and conference delegates. Still, it’s an atmospheric introduction to the befuddling world of the British beach holiday, and there are plenty of things to keep you occupied: sunbathing, shopping and water sports by day, and a wealth of bars, clubs and dodgy variety shows to explore by night.

Unfortunately, it’s also a favourite on the coach tour trail, and in high summer the main street is thronged with a constant stream of honking motors and scarlet-faced day-trippers; if you’re arriving in July or August, you’ll be better off hightailing it straight for the castle, which sits on a hilltop above the village, or just steering clear altogether.

The beautiful St George’s Church dates mostly from the 15th century and boasts a wonderfully carved fan-vaulted rood screen. Further down the road is the watermill (821759; Mill Lane; admission £2.60; 11am-4.45pm Jul-Sep, 11am-4.45pm Sat-Thurs Apr-Jun & Oct-Nov), a working 18th-century mill that’s been turning since the Domesday Book.

Nestled at the base of a broad valley dotted with oak woods and peaceful fields, and overlooked by the domed peaks of Helm Crag and Steel Fell, the little village of Grasmere is one of the prettiest in the Central Lakes. Wordsworth lived at nearby Dove Cottage for nine years and occasionally taught at the village school, which is now a famous gingerbread shop; he’s buried under the yew trees of St Oswald’s churchyard with his wife Mary and beloved sister Dorothy. Sadly, the Wordsworth connections have their drawbacks; the village is very much on the coach-tour trail, and is practically overrun with day-trippers in summer.

Wordsworth penned some of his greatest poems at Dove Cottage (35544; www.wordsworth.org.uk; adult £5.95; 9.30am-5.30pm). The building served as an inn called The Hope and Olive until 1793; Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy moved in six years later, to be joined in 1802 by William’s new wife Mary and the three eldest Wordsworth children – John, Dora and Thomas – who were born in 1803, 1804 and 1806. Covered with climbing roses and illuminated by tiny latticed windows, it’s a fascinating and atmospheric place to visit, although it can get very busy. An entertaining half-hour guided tour is included in the admission price, and entry is managed by timed tickets to avoid overcrowding.

Charleville is in the heart of Queensland’s ‘mulga country’. It is the largest town in the south west of the Outback region and was gazetted in 1868 and later named by the Government surveyor of the day, Mr WA Tully, after a town in Ireland where he had lived. In March 1888, rail transport reached Charleville. This railway gave Charleville a direct link with the state capital, Brisbane. This line still operates passenger services twice a week to Charleville on board Queensland Rail’s Westlander. Cobb and Co, the famous coach company, based their largest coach making factory in Australia in the township of Charleville in 1890. The factory was moved to Charleville because the wood used in coaches made in factories closer to the coast would split and crack in the dry, dusty conditions of Western Queensland. On the subject of transport, Qantas scheduled its first fare paying passenger service from Charleville to Cloncurry, via Longreach and Winton, back in 1922. The mulga country of Queensland’s outback is rich in history, flora and fauna. The Charleville Heritage Trail guides visitors through the history of the town and its heritage buildings. The stars almost touch the end of your nose at the Cosmos Centre and Observatory where clear nights and a low horizon combine to give visitors a great night time experience. Kangaroos, emus, birds of prey and a wondrous variety of Australian native wildlife can be seen whilst travelling this area. Visit the National Parks Research Station, home of the Save the Bilby Fund. Seasonal ‘meet the bilbies’ tours are held at the station.
