A couple of circuits leading out of town take in the scenic banks of the Lago Huechulafquen, where Mapuche settlements welcome visitors. Outside of peak season, these circuits are best done by private vehicle (or incredibly enthusiastic bike riders), but travel agents based here offer reasonably priced tours.

It offers the facilities of a large town, retains the comfortable vibe of a smaller place, and preserves more colonial architecture than most places in Argentina.

It’s the most touristed spot in northwest Argentina, and has numerous accommodation options. The center bristles with travel and tour agents; this is the place to get things organized for onward travel. Nevertheless, there’s a poorer Salta readily visible if you venture toward the city’s outskirts, with a large population of indigenous farmfolk from the province and Bolivia searching, often in vain, for a better life in the big city.

Sherborne was the capital of Wessex until the end of the 11th century, when the bishopric moved to Old Sarum, but continued to be a town of strategic and religious importance throughout the Middle Ages. These days it’s a quiet and attractive market town, filled with antique shops, haberdashers and estate agents; reminders of its former status remain in its twin castles, which stand on either side of the silvery sheen of Sherborne Lake.

Sherborne’s tourist office (815341; sherborne.tic@westdorset-dc.gov.uk; Digby Rd; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat Apr-Oct) stocks the free All About Sherborne leaflet with a map and town trail. Walking tours (£3; 11am Fri May-Sep) depart from the tourist office and last 1½ hours.

Ilfracombe, named after a small town in Devonshire England, originated in 1891 as a transport nucleus for Wellshot Station, the largest sheep station in the world at the time (in terms of stock numbers). The town had three hotels each with its own dance hall, a soft drink maker, a coach builder, two general stores, a billiard saloon, a dressmaker, three commission agents, a couple of butchers, a baker and a saddler. Today there are just 350 people living in a shire which covers an area of 6,500 square kilometres. Another record claimed by the shire is that of the largest mob of sheep ever moved as a single flock. In 1886 a mob of 43,000 sheep were moved through the area by a droving team of 27 horsemen and that doesn’t include the cooks, blacksmiths and hands which would have been needed to accompany the drovers. Transport was once the lifeblood of the area when, long before the railway reached as far as Ilfracombe, wagons drawn by up to 30 horses and taking three months carried the wool to the nearest port, Rockhampton, 650 kilometres away. It is unlikely that any other Australian town could boast such a brilliant display of historical machinery, as does Ilfracombe. Not only that, but it’s all on public show, with antique machinery and farm equipment lining the entry road to the town. Nowadays Ilfracombe is a small western Queensland township surrounded by large grazing properties, located 27 kilometres east of Longreach and 80 kilometres west of Barcaldine.

Zhazi Cave is located at the foot of Gele mountain in Ciqikou and Wulingguan, suburban area of Chongqing. Zhazi Cave used to been a coalmine founded in 1920 by a businessman named Chen Erchang. Since 1938, it became a clandestine prison for Kuomintang to lock up and persecute revolutionaries. During the war, lots of heroic, solemn and stirring stories happened in the prison. Those stories were really very touching that they encouraged the patriotic sentiment among the Chinese. In 1943 Kuomintang founded an intelligence agency: Sino-American Co-operation office. Then the Bai Gongguan, another clandestine prison, became the office building of Sino-American Co-operation office. Revolutionaries were transferred from Bai Gongguan to Zhazi Cave prison. Among those revolutionaries are the likes of the Chinese famous hero Jiang Zujun, who was honored as Jiangjie. She was also sentenced to imprisonment in the Zhazi Cave.

The day before the new Chinese government was founded in 1949, secret agents of Kuomintang set fire to Zhazi Cave prison, it was a pity that only 15 Revolutionaries survived from the fire. Zhazi Cave, as a political prison, was filled pain and death at that time, yet it was also a place where heroes were produced. It is a place that witnessed the Chinese people devoting their lives to their political belief.
We uses YouTube API Services. https://www.worldtraveldb.com/youtubes-terms-of-service/

Yerong Creek was originally named Yerong. The village began in the late 1870’s when fettlers arrived to assist in the construction of the railway line. Yerong Creek is Lockhart Shire’s oldest village. In its early years the name Yerong was incorporated in the titles of the parish, school, hotel and race club. There was one exception however, the railway station. In 1881 the Railway Department erected a sign on the platform naming the station “Yerong Creek”. It was probably the most prominent sign in the town so after a period of several decades the locals gradually accepted the name Yerong Creek. In 1880 “Yerong” had a population of over 200, and by 1881 buildings consisted of a railway station, a schoolroom, a shanty, a small store and several homes. The following few years saw the addition of the new school and residence. The school served puplis from an area between Culcairn and Uranquinty who were transported each day by train. In April, 1891, the Roads Department began to make a road through the township. This road started at the railway gates and extended west for 220m to 240m, this section is now known as Plunkett Street. Grubben Station was subdivided between 1908 and 1910, during that decade the township grew steadily. Two banks became operational. The first stage of the public hall was erected in 1911. This was followed later by several extensions and renovations. The first Post Office was opened. The new two storey hotel was built. With its rustic appearance it is an attractive building and is now utilised as a private residence. About the same time a second general store opened as did a fruit shop and a dress shop. Three stock and station agents were in business at the one time. A boarding house and a billard room were also in existence. An attraction in the early 1920’s was a Paddy’s Market. Poultry, produce and old furniture were sold at this market. In Januray 1922, the old Cooee buildings, built by Mr Elkington were burnt down, these premises housed the saddler, the barber, the fruiterer, the baker and the billiard room. This building was replaced by a brick structure which was completed in 1923, Smeaton and Gain conducted a fuel agency in these premises. Until the mid 1940’s those who came to town for supplies and a friendly ale would leave their horses tied up in the allotment where Galvin park is now situated. Today the Yerong Creek school in Cole Street caters for students from Kindergarten to year 6. The mural painted by former resident artist Gerry Willis on an exterior wall of the school, depicts Yerong Creek railway station as it appeared in years gone by.

The most popular place to organise a foray into the backwaters, this is the base for most of the houseboat-action in Kerala (and even more houseboat agents), and home to the famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race. It’s worth stopping in Alleppey to soak in some tropical village life before making a beeline for the backwaters.
