Hou Mountain also called Dog Mountain, was named after the historical fact that during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Dynasties, Gou Jian, Emperor of Yue Kingdom, raised dogs to hunt white deer to proffer to Emperor of Wu Kingdom. Since “dog” pronounces like “Hou” in the dialect of Shaoxing and it is indelicate to pronounce “dog” directly.
Its major sights include Yanluo Cave, Shengshui (means remained water) Cave, Cloud Rock and Chessboard Rock etc; its buildings consist of the Museum of Yue Culture, Sightseeing Pavilion and Shouning Temple etc, among which Cloud Rock and Chessboard Rock are the symbolic sights in Hou Mountain. They stands at the most highest place of the mountain. Being looked up, Cloud Rock is thick at the top while sin at the end, like a headstand wimble, on the top of which laying a tumbledown huge rock in shape of a flying disk, stopping viewers. Besides the Cloud Rock is the Chessboard Rock, where, according to the legend, Ge Hong played chess with another god. At the slope above the Cloud Rock, there is a natural sightseeing stage, where people built a Jinlan (means viewing everything) Pavilion.
Same as East Lake, it is also a good place to viewing the beautiful scenery of the region of water. In the spring, the flat and flecky fields of the water town expand widely; the network of rivers crisscrosses, which forms fantastic scenery of the spring of the region of water. Compared with East Lake, the visual field here will be wider since there is no block of the city. After visiting Hou Mountain, maybe you will form the impression of “remained mountain and water”. The mountain is famous for its strange rock, deep cave, clean water and especially the peach trees all over the mountain, which decorate the mountain to be more charming. And in the spring, Peach Festival will be held.

Brief introduction to the scenic spot:
It is the residence of Lu, who is the distinguished family in Wuzhou. Lu’s Residence is a multi-linearity building. Among all buildings, the main one is Building “Suyongtang”, which is located at the north street. It parallels with Building “Shidetang” and “Dafudi” to the east, parallels with the east, middle and west axis of “Shijinqidi” to the west, Building”Wutaitang” to the north. At the south street, there are Building “Zhushidi”, “Wuyuntang”, “Bingyutang”. Many of buildings were built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Building “Suyongtang” is the public hall for the whole family of Lu. It is the main axis at Lu residence, therefore, the scale and position of “Suyongtang” tops No. one among those of Lu residence. There are three main rooms at Building “Suyongtang”, also with one small room at the right and left respectively. “Songyongtang” was built with high-quality wood, exquisite carvings, which greatly shows the excellent wooden carving skill in Dongyang. Lu’s Residence is one of the largest-scale ancient buildings of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1616-1911) Dynasties in Zhejiang province.

In its north is a gardenlike house, in the south it takes the “Shanxiang Caotang” (a hall) as its main part with three stone peaks standing on the top of the small hill which is simple and quiet, in its east is a Banting Pavilion (a traditional Chinese architecture which is a half pavilion with the other side built on the wall) against the Counting fish Pavilion in the west slope and they have a relatively good height comparing with each other. Walk over the small arch bridge and along the zigzag pass to the mountain cave and you’ll find another view here.
The whole set of this garden is delicate and elegant which shows fully the beauties and features of the gardens in Jiangnan (southern China). The garden takes “Shanxiang Caotang” as its center with its south a pond and hills being as the main scenery and the north a yard. In front of the cottage, a stream is winding away and hills embracing together. The three stone bamboo shoots like three swards pointing to the sky. Over the pond there is a small arch bridge, pass over it you will get into a stone cave and will enjoy the pleasure of getting into a secluded quiet place by walking along the winding path. In front of the remains of Flower God Cabinet there is an ancient cypress tree with vigorous stocks.
Plenty of green cypresses, pines, bamboos and palms are here with flowers all the year around. Standing in the garden you will feel that all is green in your eyesight, especially after you finished a whole day’s work and take a walk in the garden, the green everywhere and the light fragment smell will make you pleasant and refreshing.

Nianbadu town is located at the deep valley of Xianxia Ridge, with a steepy topography. There are four narrow passes around the town, among which the Anminguan lies at the east, the Fenglingguan at the south, the Liushiguan at the west and the Xianxiaguan at the north. On the military stratagem, it is a place which is easy to be guarded, but difficult to be attacked. Because of its important geographical position and frequent wars in the history, Nianbadu has become an immigration town with many dialects. There are totally nine dialects and over 130 family names in the town. The old rectangle-shape town has still been preserved well. The residences were built along the Fengxi Stream, which traverses the whole town from south to north. The whole town still has the building style of the 19 century.

The Tianyi Pavilion, which adjoins the Moon Lake with elegant sceneries, is a book-storing tower with the longest history existent in our country, the oldest library existent in Asia, and one of the three largest family libraries existent in the world. In the 4th year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty(the year 1665), Fan Wenguang, the great grandson of Fan Qin, additionally built pond pavilion, planted trees around the pavilion and constructed artificial hills arranging rocks into piles shaped like lifelike and exquisite animals such as “nine lions and one elephant”, which is characteristic of gardening in the Yangtze River Delta.
In 1994, Ningbo Museum and Cultural Protection Bureau merged together, and therefore the Tianyi Pavilion Museum was established. Now the museum has been expanded into three functional areas of book-storing culture, exhibition, and gardening leisure, which blends book-storing culture, history of society, culture and arts into one and becomes a window to show history and culture of Ningbo.

The reason why East Lake can make deep impression on people’s mind mainly lies in the visual impact made by its artificial cliff. So, the most importance for visiting the lake is to appreciate the cliff, which presents different scenes from far, middle and near distances. Visiting the cliff when walking along the path aside the wall at the bank of the ancient canal, you will see the color of the cliff of different shade and caves of different shapes, presenting many levels and keeping changing. The path above the lake provides an approach to visit in the middle-distance, the cliff and caves composed by the cliff offer people the marvel and make them amaze at the perseverance of the ancestors. Of course, the way of watching in the near distance is to visit in the cave by boat. When appreciating East Lake under the cliff, you may feel the insignificance of yourself. The most wonderful things of visiting East Lake by boat are watching Taogong Cave and Xiantao (means celestial peach) Cave from the near distance; it is safe to say that without visiting these two caves, you never come to the East Lake. The entrance of Taogong Cave only admits a small boat to pass, while there is marvelous scene in the cave; when you look up at the small piece of sky at the bottom of the cave, the scene of a frog in the well will take on before your eyes. Watching Xiantao Cave at the bank, you can only see a simple stone-framed gate. However, when contacting the cave in person, you will see the huge celestial peach combined with its inverted image under the direction of the guide.
Besides the wonderful spots such as Taogong Cave and Xiantao Cave etc, there are artificial decorations to the point, including Tingqiu Pavilion, Xiachuan Bridge, Yinlu Pavilion, Guiling Mountain and Qin Bridge etc; remaining in East Lake is like standing in a picture. Besides natural scene composed by hill, stone and lake, the lake also has some historic resorts; some personages, such as Sun Zhongshan, Tao Chengzhang, Xu Xiling and Lu Xun etc, have been in East Lake for a visit or revolutionary planning. After the death of Tao Chengzhang, people in Shaoxing built Tao Organization in the lake in memory of the martyr. In the August of 1916, Sun Zhongshan came to Tao Organization in person to offer sacrifice. After the foundation of the new China, leaders of the party and the government, such as Mao Zedong, have visited East Lake for many times. Guo Moshi composed a poem in the lake: “East Lake as small as an indocalamus basket was artificially excavated. Cliffs rise for thousands of chi (a unit of length) and paths are narrow to pass. Enter the cave in big boat and watch the sky like in a frog in the well. Don’t say that the lake is small, because it contains the sky.”
