This park is about the scenery, scenery that takes your breath away, scenery that begins with the flight over dramatic snow-capped mountains, forested canyons, rivers, and lakes to land at Jiuzhaigou Airport, itself perched on the mountaintop. It’s about an hour’s drive along the alpine highway to find the narrow valley outside the park, where all the hotels are to be found. If you’re lucky enough to have a local guide, you may be briefly distracted from the scenery by the telling of local legends and stories, and even a song or two.
The Park lies on the northern border of Sichuan Province, and is part of the magnificent Min Shan mountains on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. I can’t apologise for the extravagant superlatives, it deserves them all. Jiuzhai Valley first became a Park in 1978, although it would be 14 years before it earned World Heritage listing, during which time work was aimed mainly at restoration and halting logging activities.
It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and in 1997 awarded the status of UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, and has since received many other, well-deserved listings.
Did I mention the scenery? The high mountains form a backdrop for the pretty, steep-sided valleys (conic karst, for those who are interested in the landform). Clear rivers tumble down through waterfalls and rapids, and form brilliant mineralised pools of blue, green and turquoise on the way.
The sides of the valleys are covered in dense vegetation. The range in altitude (from over 4,600m at the top of the highest mountain in the Park to just under 2000m at the Park entrance) means that there’s a range of habitats, thus a wide variety of plants and animals, many of which are endangered, and protected within the Park. Well over 2,500 different plants been catalogued to date, including a lot of conifers, rhododendrons, ferns, fungi, aquatic plants and many beautiful orchids and other flowering plants.
The wildlife here is shy, but the range is equally impressive, including 27 protected rare and endangered species like the giant panda, golden monkey, gnu, white-lip deer, black-neck crane, swan, lovebirds, red-belly golden pheasant, snow leopard, forest musk deer, and otters. However, visitors are more likely to spot some of the 141 bird species than one of the very few pandas remaining in the park. The Park authorities say that the flowering of the bamboo a couple of decades ago led to a big reduction in this staple panda food, hence the need for them to move elsewhere.
The Park did not suffer any major damage during the 2008 earthquake, and is very definitely open for visitors. The Peak Season is April through to mid-November, when it’s open from 7am – 6.30pm, and between mid-November and March the Park closes half an hour earlier, at 6pm.
Jiuzhaiguo means ‘Valley of the Nine Villages’, and the nine villages remain spread around the valley within the Park, home to about 110 Tibetan and Qiang families. Agriculture is not permitted so the locals mostly work either for the Park itself, or with the nearby hotels.
The Park covers a little over 700 sq km and there’s a further buffer zone of just under 600 sq km. No private vehicles are allowed, and shuttle buses run a continuous hop-on, hop-off service. The road is roughly ‘y’-shaped, coming down from the two main valleys, then descending as one road to the main entrance. 70 km of boardwalks link many of the scenic spots away from the road itself. They take you through some attractive areas, and have been built to provide minimum impact on the surroundings. Some people simply take a bus from spot to spot, others walk through the forests and beside the waterfalls between some or all of the spots, depending on their level of energy and fitness, and time available.
The right-hand fork runs about 17km from the top to the junction past more stops than the other side, including many of the wonderful waterfalls, rapids, and ‘5-coloured pools’. The left-hand fork is a 20-minute ride to the top, which is higher and steeper, through jagged, wilder scenery and with a beautiful long narrow lake at the highest point. There are some seasonal lakes (dry at some times of the year) and smaller colored pools on the way down.
It’s worth planning where to spend your time, and it is possible to walk away from the larger crowds. Comfortable shoes are obviously vital, and water should always be carried. No smoking in the open air is permitted within the park, and visitors are asked to stay on the designated walking trails, and not to pick flowers or to interfere with travertine or other water life. The Park is beautifully maintained despite high visitor numbers. It takes its conservation and sustainability role extremely seriously, and has sister park relationships with Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, Yosemite, Yellowstone and Olympic National Parks in the USA.
The climate ranges from a comfortable July mean of 17ºC, although at this altitude it can feel warmer, down to a mean -3 ºC in January, with the heaviest snow falls from December to February.
Outside the Park there’s a range of accommodation options, including 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. In the evening the local music and dancing shows are tremendous, and great fun. Usually Tibetan themed, they feature wonderful costumes, song and dance, with a mixture of ethnic performance and popular music. In some cases local audiences can be as enjoyable as the show,(depending on where you go) and often rush up to drape a singer with the hada (a white silk scarf that is presented to everyone on arrival), and pose for photos, with the singer continuing all the while. A truly memorable experience!
The Beauty Peak is the third largest peak of the E’mei Mountain Range. With an altitude of 2027 meters, it seems like a beauty being on her back. Hence, it is reputed as “sleeping beauty” by Guo Moruo, a great writer in modern times. The landscapes of the Beauty Peak are noted for the Shawan Stone Forest, which covers an area of about ten square meters. There are exotic and beautiful mountain rocks and exuberant plants in the stone forest. The stone peaks and bamboos are like beasts and gods of varied shapes with motion amid quietness; the stone pottery has stones tangled with vines and between trees. The stones and trees set off against each other. The dissolved grotto passes through the mountain and clear spring and waterfall curve around the stone.
We uses YouTube API Services. https://www.worldtraveldb.com/youtubes-terms-of-service/

Danba Beauty Valley is well known for ladies in this area. No matter they stay in the village or walk out of the mountain, they rarely make up or dress up with colorful clothes. They are very industrious and hardworking people. In spite of cold wind or torrid sun, as long as they make a little wash or dress, their glamorous body shape, charm, elegance, and beauty of health will be hard to hide. Their soft and fine skin transmits the gentle shine of jade. The valley is endowed with exquisite landscape. During grand festivals, such as Spring Festival and Beauty Competition, the beautiful ladies of Danba Valley will return to their hometown. It is a good opportunity for tourists to appreciate their beauty and charm.
We uses YouTube API Services. https://www.worldtraveldb.com/youtubes-terms-of-service/

General Situation:
Hailuo Dyke Glacier Forest Park is superior to Alaska Glacier Park in the United States and Canuk Glacier Park in Canada as the unique glacier park boasting of the lowest altitude, most frequent geographical movements, and most complete glacier landforms. Hailuo Dyke Glacier came into being 1600 years ago. It is one of the rare glaciers with low altitude in the world. To the east of the ridge of the highest peak in Gongga Mountain Range lie precipitous mounts and deep valleys, presenting a rolling landform unique to the park. The roaring and deep Dadu River is accompanied by steep peaks and cliffs.
Here leans the grand canyon of about 30 kilometers wide and 6500 meters deep, rare to see in other places of the world. It is where the famous Hailuo Dyke Glacier Scenic Area is situated. The scenic area features complicated landforms and unique climatic features. There is a long spring time but without summer all over the year at the foot of Gongga Mountain. With amiable weather and lush trees, the average temperature here is 15? annually. But the mountain top is covered with white snow in the whole year and the annual temperature there is around 9? on average. Hailuo Dyke is originated from a river canyon of melted ice at the east slope of the highest peak in Gongga Mountain.
No. 1 Encampment
No. 1 Encampment is the key area of Hailuo Dyke Scenic Area. It has lush primeval forest and diversified rare animals, such as macaque, little panda, red-belly tragopan, and argal, etc. In summer and autumn the rare animals will be very active, and they are often seen in the forest. No. 1 Encampment covers the middle, upper, and sky-high parts of Gongga Mountain. Boasting an altitude of over 6000 meters, it enjoys the seven unique vegetation belts and soil belts in the world. Besides, it boasts most verities of plant and animal in China, such as cuckoo tree, Chinese larch, yew, dragon spruce, giant panda, gazelle, macaque, sunbird, and red-belly pheasant, etc. In addition, there are aromatic and colorful flowers of various breeds.
No. 2 Encampment
Feiquan Hot Springs in No. 2 Encampment is very famous. The high temperature spring water, which is around 90? at the exit, runs continuously all through the year. The hot spring water contains sodium bicarbonate and thus has obvious curative effect. Clear and transparent without smell, the spring water is very effective for the treatment of neuralgia, stomach and intestine disease, diabetes, and arthritis, etc. By now, there are ten open hot-springs and one open hot-spring swimming pool of 200 square kilometers. Around the hot springs are lush forests. During winter time, you can appreciate the fantastic scenery of falling snow while enjoying bathing in a hot spring.
No. 3 Encampment
With an altitude of 2940 meters, the No. 3 Encampment is eight kilometers away form No. 2 Encampment with the ancient Moraine Lake in between. The roof top of Jinshan Restaurant is the best place for appreciating “Jinshan Mountain in Sunlight”, one of the five wonders in Hailuo Dyke Glacier Forest Park. When it is fine, the golden sunlight will irradiate the Sanlian Peak, Jinyin Mountian, and Wuming Peak of Gongga Mountains through the rosy clouds in the early morning. Instantly the peaks covered with white snow will put on a dazzling golden coat, which is effulgent and spectacular beyond expression. The best time for appreciating the scenery is 6: 40 in spring and summer, and 7: 20 in autumn and winter.
[Marvelous Spectacle of Glacier]
Traveling ahead for three kilometers from Jinshan Restaurant, you will arrive at the viewing platform of glacier. It will present to you the huge and grand scenery of ocean glacier in modern times. Portending from 2940 meters to 6750 meters above the sea, Hailuo Dyke Glacier is the largest, longest, and most gorgeous glacier in Gongga Mountains. It is composed of neve basis, huge waterfall, and glacier lingua respectively from the upper to the lower extending 13 kilometers. The glacier lingua is five kilometers in length. It grows into the primeval forest of fir, and gives birth to the wonderful scenery of glacier and forest coexistent with each other. Walking down the viewing platform, you will reach the majestic glacier in half an hour and have a close “contact” with it. On the glacier lingua of 5.7 kilometers long and 40—150 meters thick spreads the ice-surface lake, glacier arc bridge, serac forest, glacier stone fungus, glacier cracks, ice caves, ice river, and glacier city gate, etc. Among them, the crystal like glacier arch bridge shines green and blue.?
Grand Glacier Waterfall
Traveling forward on the glacier for one and half an hour, you will arrive at the viewing platform of the grand glacier waterfall in the black pine forest. The huge neve base at the east slope of Gongga Mountain is the origin of Hailuo Dyke Glacier. The glacier reaches out of the neve base and displays the biggest waterfall ever found in the world. It is 1080 meters high and 1100 meters wide. Spectacular and crystal like, it is the rare and majestic glacier in the world. In recent years, the glacier on the grand ice waterfall tends to crash. There are frequent icefall and snow slide all through the year. It is estimated that from spring to autumn, small scale icefalls or snow slides have happened for thousands of times. Each time when there is a big icefall, there will be granules of ice and snow splashing to all directions with blue shine. The sound of moving snow waves can reach several kilometers far.
Tientai Mountain rises more than 1,500 meters, having one platform on the top. The mountain got this name because it is often in cloud and among mist.
Originally on Tientai Mountain, a Taoist architecture named “Tientai Taoist Temple” was built during Emperor Qianlong’s reign. But it no longer exists now. A few years ago, “Tientai Cabinet” was newly built, where tourists may doze. In 1992, with donations from other temples, another temple was built along the slope of mountain. It is managed by monks, which becomes another new interesting tourist spot.
On Tientai Mountain, there are ten thousands mu dense and luxuriant forests. Gale coming you can hear its crazy whistling among pines. The burning sun hangs in the sky but dense shade screens the sunlight. When you walk up high on the mountain and have a look into the distance numerous mountains will seem small to you. Look below you will see cloud and mist curling up underfoot, like being in a wonderland. What a rare tourist attraction.
More than 100 meters away to the east of Tientai Mountain, you will see one peculiar landscape: a peach-shaped giant stone standing top down and without any supporting around. Gale coming, it even sways. On its top may stand more than 10 people. When all people put forth their strength simultaneously, it can be also swayed According to traditional saying, this is the piece of saucer peach eaten by Sun Wukong (an immortal monkey). The piece fell down to the ground and has molten into this stone after many years. Therefore, it is called “Saucer Peach Stone”
More than 100 steps from saucer peach stone, there is another giant stone with flat top. It may hold more than 20 people. Giant stone and platform are about 2 meter apart, so you can leap up onto giant stone. The giant stone is shaded by lofty trees around. You can sit on it playing chess, or reading a book. Either is a good choice. According to the legend this is the place where Sima Guang used to read a book, called “platform for book-reading.
There is a hole on Tainan Precipice, named “classics Hidden Hole” though whether some one had hidden classics here, has not been known after all. At the center of platform, there is a fountain well, running all through the year and having clear and cool water.
