Pudong ranks as the largest of the 18 districts in Shanghai, having total area of 522.75 square kilometers. “Pudong”, means “East of Huangpu River”. The old portion of the City is referred to as Puxi, which means “on the West of Huangpu River”.
Pudong, or Pudong New District was developed from April 18, 1990 under the orders of the former Chairman Jiang Zhemin’s. In 18 years, Pudong has turned from a fishing village and farm land into a modern, prosperous, and green district in Shanghai.
On the East Bank of Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower welcomes almost 35,000 tourists per day from Home and abroad. In the surrounding area of 1.7 square kilometers is the well-known “Lujiazui Finance and Trade Area”, consisting of office building complex, hotels, residential buildings and a shopping mall. The architectures are of different designs. Take a look at the Bank of China Building, HSBC Building, Standard Charter Building, the Merchants Tower, etc. They are modern and high, some are even skyscrapers, which makes a great contrast with the historic buildings on the West side of the Bund. Jin Mao Tower in the shape of a traditional Chinese pagoda has 88 storeys; Shanghai World Financial Center is going to break the record with 101 storeys, 492 meters high. It is like “Manhattan in China,” only there is a large piece of green and a historic house, which adds some Chinese element and nature to the “cement forests”. Suggest taking tourist bus to have a round trip around Lujiazui.
Down the Century Avenue, when you see a huge sundial, you have arrived at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Technology Museum. There are a square and a large market selling souvenirs nearby, and Century Park within walking distance. Stand on the square where people fly kites and skate, and look up at the buildings far away, you will find surprising similarity between the view of the City and that in “the Star Wars”!
Many may prefer to live in Puxi, because they think there are a lot more options of restaurants, shops and other facilities; while more and more people like Pudong, because it is larger, clean, modern and green. Tourists who plan to visit Shanghai cannot miss Pudong; and expatriates can choose Pudong as the ideal place of work and residence.
Pudong, with a tariff-free zone and a high-technology zone, is attracting more and more foreign investment to Shanghai. As confirmed these days, a new Disneyland, larger than that in Hongkong will be opened in Chuansha Town, Pudong, almost at the same time as Expo 2010, which will be held in Pudong as well.

Hongmiao, built under the collection of farmers in Hongmiao, was called the City of Farmers. Qingcun Xanadu and modern agriculture garden had form the traveling environment, featured in village custom and rurality, which was listed in Shanghai Top 10 leisure tour. The archaized street, decorated with blue bricks and red tiles, is the business street in Hongmiao Town. The carnie, near the archaized street, offers all kinds of entertainment activities like bowling and swimming. While the farm area locates in the eastern part, cole, vegetables, vegetables cote and fish pool, you can feel the lvitality of nature.

Situated by the side of the Dayingpu River in the northeast of Qingpu County, Shanghai, the Qushui (Zigzagging Channel) Garden was first built in 1745, or the 10th year of the Qianlong Reign of the Qing Dynasty. Construction of the garden lasted for 40 years and after completion, the garden contained over 30 buildings. It is one of the five ancient gardens in Shanghai.

Sheshan Goddess Church, also named Sheshan Catholicism Church is the main pilgrimage bethel in China’s coastal area. Zhongshan Church was built in 1894, and the Shanding Hall, designed by Mr. Ye Zhaochang-a Portuguese chiliast was added in 1925. The whole construction reveals Rome style. There stands a copper Goddess figure at the top f the church. Sheshan Goddess Church was honored to be the Second Class hall by Rome Church in 1942.

Huaihai Road, for centuries of luxury and boom, is still twinkling in modern times. The straight road, with French phoenix trees on both sides, has form a green aisle. It is one of China’s biggest wild animal parks and covers an area of 153 hectares. There are over 200 rare species and over 10,000 animals from all over the world, including giraffe, zebra, white rhinoceros and hunting leopards. Some indigenous animals under special protection include giant pandas, golden monkeys, south-china tigers, and Asian elephants and many others.
The Shanghai Wild Animal park is divided into two areas: one for walking, and one which is accessible to buses. There is a herbivore zone, a free zone, aquatic bird lake, bird zone, animal kindergarten, pet monkey park, rare animal park, animal performance zone, sea lion performance zone and other spots in this Park.
The walking area allows a close look at many gentle animals on foot. During a leisurely walk you will see Australian kangaroos, Asian Sika deer, African ring-tailed lemurs and Latin American yellow and blue macaws and more.
The bus enclosure takes you among zebra, yak, deer, elephant and some other fierce beasts. Be forewarned though: the bus park is not suitable for all, especially young children or those with a delicate temperament. Sometimes, you may encounter unpleasant even gruesome sight.
There is also a special animal zoo which is a hit with small kids where they can have a close-up look at the lovely animals.

Within the old city of Shanghai is a small artificial lake. In the middle of the lake there is a large pavilion. Originally the lake and the pavilion were part of the Yu Garden, constructed by a Ming Dynasty official called Pan Yunduan; and the pavilion was originally called “Fuyi Pavilion.” In 1784, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, Zhu Yunhui, Zhang Fuchen and several other textile merchants had the pavilion restored and thereafter renamed it “Mid-lake Pavilion.” Here the cloth dealers met either to take a rest or to hold business talks. In 1855, during the reign of Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty, the pavilion was made into a teahouse, which was first called “Yeshi”, and then “Wanzai” and finally “Mid-lake Pavilion Teahouse.”It is the oldest teahouse in Shanghai still in operation.
The teahouse is elegantly decorated in traditional Chinese style, and can accomodate more than 200 patrons at one time. The tea served is made from pure mineral water, and from delicate tea leaves produced in different famous tea-growing areas to suit the varied habits and predilections of the tea drinkers. Deilcious refeshments of Chinese cuisine are also served. Everyday, some tea connoisseurs invited by the teahouse show the polite formalities of tea sampling as in the olden days, and every Monday aftemoon, a band plays traditional Chinese woodwind and string instruments to entertain the tea sippers. Sitting and sipping tea in the pavilion and watching the varying surrounding scenes can be a very ecjoyable way of spending one’s leisure. The “Mid-lake Pavilion Teahouse” is an interesting and well-known spot which attracts numerous visitors from all over the world every year. A few years ago, when Queen Elizabeth 11 of Britain visited Shanghai, she also sipped tea in this teahouse and talked with some ordinary Shanghai inhabitants. The “Mid-lake Pavilion Teahouse” has become a characterisitic spot to receive state guests in Shanghai.
